Apartheid in Israel? A Closer Look at the Real Meaning of “Apart”

“Apartheid”, it’s a word that has become increasingly weaponized in global conversations about Israel. But let’s take a step back and look at its original Dutch meaning. In Dutch, “apart” simply means unique, different, special, or even strange. And by that definition, Israel is absolutely “apart.”

Israel is a nation like no other, a vibrant, diverse, and democratic country in the heart of a volatile region. A place where cultures mix, minorities thrive, and freedom lives. But ironically, it’s this uniqueness that has led to Israel being singled out, distorted in the media, and isolated by much of the international community.

A Nation Apart, in the Best Way

Let’s begin with what truly makes Israel “apart” in a positive sense. This small country is a melting pot of over 100 nationalities. Jews from Ethiopia, Morocco, Russia, Argentina, France, Iran, and beyond all live side-by-side blending their customs into one rich Israeli culture. In parallel, Israel is home to a thriving Arab minority that enjoys full citizenship.

In what other Middle Eastern country will you find Christians, Muslims, Jews, Druze, and Bahá’ís all freely practicing their religion? Where else will you see road signs in three languages: Hebrew, Arabic, and English? Or banknotes with Arabic printed on them, despite decades of terrorism and incitement coming from sectors of the Arab world?

Where else do women serve not only in the workforce but also in the armed forces, shoulder to shoulder with men? Where else can LGBTQ+ people march openly, have full legal rights, and even serve in parliament? That is what makes Israel unique. That is what makes it “apart”  in the Dutch sense.

The Real Apartheid: Against Jews

When critics scream “apartheid,” they are ignoring the true apartheid happening in the region against Jews.

Let’s take the Temple Mount, Judaism’s holiest site. Jews are allowed to enter, but only under strict limitations. They are stopped, interrogated by Israeli police working under pressure from Islamic authorities, and asked if they’re hiding religious articles like tefillin. They are told: “No praying allowed.” And if they whisper a prayer or move their lips in silent devotion they risk being expelled. Meanwhile, Muslim worshippers are free to pray, gather, and even play football on the Mount.

Want to respectfully visit the Dome of the Rock? If you’re Jewish , “Sorry. Muslims only.” Now that is real segregation. That is real apartheid.

Jews are also banned from Gaza. Not by Israeli law, but because entering would mean certain death. Why? Because they are Jews. That’s apartheid. That’s ethnic hatred.

UNRWA: Institutional Apartness

Now let’s talk about how the world treats Israel differently, not just in rhetoric but in structure. The United Nations created a separate agency, UNRWA, only for Palestinian refugees. Every other refugee in the world, from Syria, Sudan, Ukraine,  falls under the UNHCR. Why the special treatment?

Because the world isn’t looking to solve the Palestinian refugee problem,  it’s looking to preserve it. Generations later, Palestinians who have never seen the land their great-grandparents left are still considered “refugees.” No other group receives this status. This institutional bias keeps Palestinians locked in grievance, funded by global donations, and used as a political tool, not to promote peace, but to deny Israel’s right to exist.

That is apartheid, the world keeping one group “apart” from solutions, to keep another, Israel, constantly delegitimized.

Fake News: Lies Turned into “Truth”

Another tragic way in which Israel is kept “apart” is through the widespread spread of fake news.

Major media outlets routinely publish stories about Israel that are later proven false yet the damage is done. Images from Syria or Iraq are recycled and labeled as “Gaza.” Statements by Hamas are treated as fact. Reports of “massacres” are posted instantly, before any investigation, and when disproven, no correction is issued.

Hamas itself has an entire disinformation unit dedicated to staging scenes, manipulating death counts, and fabricating stories to paint Israel as a villain. The media, especially in the West,  eats it up. Meanwhile, Israel’s press releases, fact-checks, and evidence are ignored.

This is how Israel is made to be “apart”,  the only country that fights not only real wars but also propaganda wars every single day, simply to justify its right to exist.

A World That Wants One Country to Lose

And here lies the darkest truth: Israel is the only country in the world that the international community seems to want to lose a war for its survival.

Think about it: when Russia invaded Ukraine, the world sent weapons, aid, and solidarity. When Israel is attacked by thousands of rockets from Hamas or Hezbollah, what happens? Calls for “restraint.” Ceasefire demands before Israel can dismantle the terror networks that started the war. No other country is pressured to tolerate terrorism just because their enemies have fewer tanks.

Why is Jewish self-defense seen as aggression? Why are Jewish casualties downplayed, and Jewish pain dismissed? Because the world has created a narrative where Israel is not just different but unwanted. That is the real apartheid: a system where one nation is demonized simply for existing.

Free Israel from the Lies of Apartheid

So yes  Israel is “apart.” It is unique. It is different. It is extraordinary in its democracy, resilience, and diversity. But the real apartheid is not committed by the Israeli government. It is committed by those who bar Jews from holy sites, who incite hate, who preach genocide, and by a global system that treats the world’s only Jewish state as a criminal, just for defending itself.

It’s time to stop misusing the word apartheid. It’s time to start calling out real injustice and freeing Israel from the lie that it is the oppressor, when in fact, it is the victim of global double standards, hate, and distortion.

Free Israel from the false label of apartheid. And stand with the truth.

CEO of Time to Stand Up for Israel, a nonprofit organization with a powerful mission: to support Israel and amplify its voice around the world. With over 200,000 followers across various social media platforms, our community is united by a shared love for Israel and a deep commitment to her future. My journey as an advocate for Israel began early. When I was 11 years old, my father was deployed to the Middle East through his work with UNTSO. I had the unique experience of living in both Syria and Israel, and from a young age, I witnessed firsthand the contrast in cultures and realities. That experience shaped me profoundly. Returning to the Netherlands, I quickly became aware of the growing wave of anti-Israel sentiment — and I knew I had to speak out. Ever since, I’ve been a fierce and unapologetic supporter of Israel. I’m not religious, but my belief is clear and unwavering: Israel has the right to exist, and Israel has the duty to defend herself. My passion is rooted in truth, love, and justice. I’m a true Zionist at heart. From my first breath to my last, I will stand up for Israel.
