I would call it, from Fairytale to Pipedream
Israel wants peace, Muslims land, let’s be friends by giving each other.
Unfortunately, with much help from the international community, they ended up with plenty more land (but never enough) with still no peace.
The sequel to this ‘success story on paper’ could be, Jordan needs water, Israel needs energy, let’s be friends and give each other.
Jordan certainly needs water. Israel has plenty, reclaimed from the sea. We will drink seawater and Jordan rainwater from the Sea of Galilee.
But, Israel supposedly doesn’t have enough land to harvest solar power. Jordan, 72% of Palestine, is mostly empty desert. Let’s swap commodities.
The ‘experts’ are upbeat about this because … Israel and Jordan had for decades a power station at their border in the Jordan river while fighting wars trying to kill off/save all Jews in Israel. How reassuring. Not.
The truth is that Israel doesn’t need more land for solar power generation. When we hook up every rooftop’s sun collectors to the grid and reduce (gasp, yes, reduce) our power consumption. (And eat less meat!)
Let’s sell them water but quit illusions about shared interests. Jordanian hatred of Jews is as thick as ever. No amount of water will cleanse that.
