Hamas’s Deflection Playbook
The nature of war has shifted—now it is fought as much through words and images as with weapons. This transformation is strikingly evident in the information and ideological war waged by Hamas and its supporters against Israel and, by extension, the foundational values of Western democracies. Their social media and propaganda strategy is both bold and deeply troubling: for every atrocity Hamas commits—terror, violence, and hatred—they accuse Israel, Jews, and Zionists of perpetrating. This is no coincidence; it is a calculated tactic of deflection, designed to shift blame and demonize the victim in the eyes of the global community.
The Deflection Playbook
Since the brutal October 2023 invasion, when Hamas fighters indiscriminately targeted, tortured, and abducted Israeli civilians—including women, children, and the elderly—the machinery of misinformation sprang into action. When Israel responded in self-defense with countermeasures in Gaza, international outlets sympathetic to Hamas reframed the conflict as “Israel’s War on Gaza,” casting aggressors as victims and immediately demanding ceasefires. Hamas strategically used each ceasefire to regroup, rearm, and continue both their violent terrorist attacks and, more crucially, their methodical information warfare campaign, which follows these four basic steps:
- Step 1: Construct the “Occupation” Narrative
Narratives of occupation dismiss centuries of Jewish connection to the land—connections that are divinely promised, lawfully purchased, and internationally recognized by the United Nations. Many Palestinians asserting indigenous rights are actually descendants of more recent migrants from Egypt and Jordan. Despite this, relentless propaganda paints Israel as the usurper, erasing the historical record of cultivation, sacrifice, self-defense, and repeated acceptance of partition and peace offers. - Step 2: Infiltrate Universities with Imperialism and Apartheid Rhetoric
While Israel grants full citizenship to over two million Muslim citizens—offering a level of integration, democracy, and coexistence unmatched in the region—Hamas, the Arab League, and their allies label Israel an “imperialist apartheid state.” This accusation ignores that more than 50 Muslim-majority countries across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia have historically expelled or excluded Jewish communities. The real apartheid is overlooked, while the only Jewish state is vilified. - Step 3: Normalize Genocide Accusations and “Baby Killer” Tropes
Hamas’s charter openly declares its genocidal aim to destroy Israel and its people. Their history includes suicide bombings and horrific crimes such as rape, mutilation, and even burning children alive, targeting innocent Israelis in synagogues, schools, malls, and homes. Yet they cynically accuse Israel of genocide when Israeli forces respond to terrorism. They use this rhetoric to incite global outrage and hide their own atrocities. - Step 4: Manufacture False Accusations of Starvation and Humanitarian Blockade
Hamas’s abduction and torture of hundreds of Israeli hostages in Gaza’s terror tunnels is overshadowed by claims that Israel starves Gaza’s civilians. In reality, Israel facilitates tens of thousands of truckloads of humanitarian aid, much of which Hamas intercepts and sells on the black market to finance further terror. Humanitarian crises are then exploited as propaganda, with Hamas portraying itself as the victim, manipulating global outrage.
This relentless pattern reflects a broader Hamas strategy: recruit new terrorists, provoke conflict, lure Israel into errors in densely populated urban warfare, create photogenic “martyrs,” and flood global media with emotional yet deceptive narratives. The ultimate goal is to incite international condemnation, fuel economic boycotts (like BDS), legal attacks (via the UN and ICC), and social warfare by reviving centuries-old blood libels that paint Jews and Zionists as pariahs.
The Global Front: Demographic and Ideological Infiltration
Hamas’s information and narrative warfare extends beyond Israel. They, along with allied radical movements, pursue a broader strategy that leverages mass immigration—including a small radicalized minority—into Western democracies in Europe, North America, and Australia. While most immigrants contribute positively to society, a disturbing subset aims ideologically to transform these pluralistic, tolerant democracies into enclaves governed by rigid interpretations of Sharia law. Through aggressive political activism, these groups seek to undermine democratic values, erode civil liberties, and shift public opinion and policy against Israel.
Their explicit ambitions include:
- Weakening Western support for Israel by winning hearts and minds through misinformation and social justice rhetoric.
- Creating radicalized Islamist-influenced enclaves that serve as hubs for political pressure, activism, and intimidation.
- Ultimately, establishing a global Caliphate governed by Sharia law, in direct opposition to democracy, individual rights, and diversity.
This campaign also permeates educational institutions, spreading anti-Israel sentiment and distortions among children and university students. This fosters a generational shift away from Israel, framed as a quest for equity and human rights, leading many youths to reject the democratic values their forebears embraced.
The Existential Stakes
Israel’s survival is contested on multiple fronts: military, diplomatic, economic, and above all, narrative. Surrounded by terrorists at its borders and hostile regimes—most notably Iran—Israel faces daunting challenges in mounting an effective counter-narrative. Its enemies are numerous, coordinated, and invested in a sophisticated campaign to isolate the Jewish state and marginalize Jews and their supporters worldwide.
The Call for Truth
The only antidote to this orchestrated deflection and infiltration is to expose it for what it truly is and reclaim the narrative with clarity, integrity, and moral courage. The global community—especially those who treasure democracy, human rights, and truth—must recognize Hamas and its backers as agents of terror, hate, and genocide. Only by unmasking their actions and ambitions can we counter their campaign, defend the rights and dignity of Jews and Israelis, and protect the values on which free societies stand.
As the information war rages alongside kinetic conflict, the stakes are nothing less than the truth itself—and the defense of civilization against those who seek to dismantle it from within.
