Historic Knesset Meeting: Ending Oslo Betrayal and Reclaiming Joseph’s Tomb for the Jewish People

June 12, 2025 — After decades of disgraceful surrender and government failure, the Knesset finally held a crucial session on Thursday demanding the full, permanent restoration of Jewish presence at Joseph’s Tomb (Kever Yosef) in Shechem (Nablus). Led by MK Tzvi Succot (Religious Zionism) in the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee lobby, this was the first serious effort in decades to enforce Israel’s rights under the Oslo Accords and put an end to Palestinian desecration and theft of this sacred Jewish site.

This meeting follows large-scale IDF operations in Shechem and mounting pressure from settlers, security officials, and national leaders to reassert Israeli sovereignty over Kever Yosef — a site repeatedly vandalized and defiled by Palestinians while the Israeli government looked the other way.

Our enemies know how important it is to us — we must reclaim it

MK Succot made clear that restoring a permanent Jewish presence at Joseph’s Tomb is not a request but a national duty. Historically, morally, and strategically, this site belongs to the Jewish people. The Bible explicitly identifies this land as ours, and Israel must stop bowing to terror threats, political weakness, and bureaucratic paralysis.

Joining Succot were Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan, MK Amit Halevi, MK Limor Son Har-Melech, representatives from Yeshivat Od Yosef Chai, and senior IDF officials, all acknowledging the urgent need to reclaim Kever Yosef. The call to restore permanent Jewish access is backed by a broad and growing coalition.

A shameful history of abandonment and destruction

On October 7, 2000, as the Second Intifada exploded, the Israeli government cowardly abandoned Joseph’s Tomb. Within hours, Palestinian mobs torched the tomb and sacred Torah scrolls, destroyed the ancient tombstone, and painted the site green in a blatant attempt to erase the Jewish connection and falsely claim it as a Muslim holy site. This betrayal came just days after Ariel Sharon’s visit to the Temple Mount — a courageous act exploited by enemies of Israel.

Twenty-three years later, on the same date, Israel suffered the horrific massacre of October 7, 2023 — proof positive of what happens when Israel abandons its heritage and security.

Oslo Accords ignored and broken

Article V of Oslo II explicitly guarantees Joseph’s Tomb as a Jewish holy site with full, unhindered Jewish access and security. Yet the government has shamefully restricted Jewish visits to a humiliating 12 times a year — under heavy military escort, at night, and subject to last-minute cancellations.

This is a national disgrace and an outright betrayal of Jewish heritage and Israeli sovereignty.

IDF evasions and excuses

IDF officials dodged clear answers, citing “complexities” that lawmakers supposedly don’t fully understand — a transparent attempt to stall and avoid accountability. No concrete decisions were made, but the message was clear: the status quo must end.

Though no formal resolution was passed, MK Succot confirmed several follow-up meetings are planned to push for permanent Israeli control and unrestricted Jewish access to Joseph’s Tomb — fulfilling Israel’s legal and moral obligations once and for all.

The fight to reclaim Joseph’s Tomb is intensifying. Israel will no longer tolerate weakness, betrayal, or abandonment of its rightful heritage and security.
