From now on, we need to highlight motives and profits, not facts
We’ve entered a new era and hardly anyone noticed. Evil has a new face and can’t be stopped with the old weaponry. The new evil is brazenly lying.
Trump is world-famous. But the current Prime Minister of the Netherlands is very good at it too.
It used to be that when a minister was caught lying, s/he had to go home. It used to be that when a civil servant was caught lying, the minister of that department had to resign. It used to be that when a civil servant under the previous minister was caught lying under the current one, the current minister of that department had to resign. I used to be that when someone with a necktie said something, everyone believed it.
But, these are some of the tricks the current PM has used not to resign:
I’m angry at the big firms we helped that don’t let the money trickle down.
Me resigning under a pandemic’s worse than trying to protect the country.
I’m not proud of what I said there.
The least you tell the Parliament, the least criticism it may have.
I’ll lead a reform to change the political culture (and then not doing that).
I don’t remember saying that. I don’t say I didn’t say that.
I have no active memory of saying that.
I will not reveal my source because that’s confidential.
We have made a serious mistake, and I apologize for that.
He declared his coalition demissionary and just continued at the helm.
Now, everyone knows he’s lying and cheating, but it just doesn’t matter. It has become as irrelevant as his eye color. Surely, any lie will be meted out broadly by the opposition and the press, but that too won’t matter.
The new tactics need to be, not listening to what politicians say but calculating what their policies would do, whom they’d benefit and hurt.
An urgent question is climate change. We’re about to die out as a species, but the warnings by scientists are ignored. They bring facts. So, the people who rather die rich than save the human race simply present ‘alternative facts.’ Facts are neutralized. What needs to be shown is who will profit and who will get hurt if we continue like that.
From now on, we need to focus on motives and profits, not facts.
Liking or disliking what a politician actually says is so 2015.
