You can learn a lot by reading the news – a  certain amount about the news, but alot about how the news is reported. Even just by reading the headlines.

On September 29, 2025, as Trump met with Netanyahu in the White House, as Netanyahu called the Qatari leader to apologize, and at the lengthy press conference held by Trump and Netanyahu, in Toronto I was following along via the Times of Israel and Haaretz. In the evening, I watched (via Times of Israel) the whole 29-minute press conference (as recorded live on CBS television). To me, as I read and watched and listened, I saw a turning point, a reason for optimism, hope for the future, the promise of peace.

But I was curious to know how Trump’s 20-point end-the-Gaza-war peace plan, endorsed by Netanyahu, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Indonesia, Pakistan, Türkiye, the Palestinian Authority, France’s Macron and UK’s Starmer, was being reported to others.  So on the morning of September 30 at 7:30 am EST,  I scanned the front pages of The New York Times, BBC, Toronto’s Globe and Mail, and Al Jazeera, as well as The Times of Israel.

Looking at the headlines of the coverage was very revealing, not so much about Trump’s 20-point plan, but about the editorial position taken by these leading media. What was emphasized? What was left out? What are we meant to understand? How much of the editorial position of the newspaper is contained in the headline?

The New York Times

Under  “Middle East Crisis” there were two articles, headlined as follows:

ANALYSIS: With New U.S. Deal to End Gaza War, a Rare Moment of Triumph for Netanyahu Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel got almost everything he hoped for, despite mounting international isolation.

ANALYSIS: Trump and Netanyahu Tell Hamas to Agree With Their Peace Plan, or Else Standing next to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Trump said Israel would have a green light to “finish the job” if Hamas refused to accept the deal.

BBC News

Under “WORLD”, the very first headline:

Netanyahu says Israel will ‘forcibly resist’ Palestinian statehood, as Trump warns Hamas to accept peace plan The White House’s plan makes reference to an eventual “credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood”.

The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

Under “U.S. POLITICS: World”, the third headline, (AFTER “Modest protest outside Portland ICE facility at odds with Trump’s claims of chaos” and “China’s drive to attract foreign tech talent sparks rare anti-immigrant backlash”:

Trump proposes 20-point Gaza peace plan endorsed by Netanyahu

 Al Jazeera (English)

Here developments were prominently covered, with no less than 5 headlines:
