As we complete the second day of the long-awaited showdown between Israel and Iran, let us first and foremost recognize that the ultimate glory in our success here belongs to the Almighty—Hashem, the Eternal Sovereign, who guides all things and works through humanity as His instruments. As we celebrate Israel’s incredible achievements thus far, even as the fighting is ongoing, we acknowledge that their success is rooted in Divine will; it is the Master of the Universe who neither slumbers nor sleeps and to whom all triumph is due.

Saluting the IDF’s Heroism

Yet, we also pay profound tribute to the extraordinary courage and dedication of the men and women of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). In the face of an existential threat from Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the IDF has demonstrated unparalleled heroism. In just two days, Israel has asserted control over the skies above Iran, neutralized key military, intelligence, and scientific leadership, and struck decisive blows against critical infrastructure—including nuclear enrichment sites, missile bases, airfields, and energy resources. This swift and comprehensive victory stands as a testament to the IDF’s operational excellence and unyielding commitment to safeguarding the Jewish state and, indeed, the world.

A Legacy of Protection

It is a remarkable legacy: Israel’s preemptive actions have repeatedly protected humanity from the specter of nuclear proliferation—first in Iraq in 1981, then in Syria in 2007, and now in Iran in 2025. The world owes an immense debt of gratitude to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and to every soldier, airman, and intelligence operative who risked their lives so that others might live in peace.

A poignant moment during synagogue services today reminded us of the spirit and humor that sustain our people in times of crisis. A young woman shared the parable of the commander’s four envelopes:

A prominent army commander left his successor four envelopes, instructing, ‘Open one each time you face a major crisis.’

When the new commander encountered his first crisis, he opened the first envelope and read: ‘Blame your predecessor.’ He followed the advice and resolved the issue.

Some time later, a second crisis arose. The commander opened the second envelope: ‘Conduct a reorganization.’ He did so, but this was a band-aid.

The third crisis followed soon after and he opened the third envelope: ‘Fault a lack of resources and manpower.’ He followed this advice as well and it failed just as quickly.

When a fourth crisis struck, he opened the final envelope, which read: ‘Prepare four envelopes.’

While this story of leadership in adversity provides a moment of lightness and relief, we know that the IDF stands apart from this: it is a force that does not rely on excuses or blame but on faith, strategy, and unshakable resolve. While others doubted Israel’s ability to confront and overcome Iran, we never lost faith. With trust in the Almighty and the dedication of our soldiers, the IDF has proven itself once again as one of the world’s most formidable fighting forces.

If we step back slightly, we can see that the true miracle is the fusion of secular Zionism and physical prowess—working the land and defending the Jewish people around the world—with the enduring spirit and holiness of the Torah and the covenant between the Israelites and G-d. This unique blend of worldly strength and sacred purpose is what has enabled Israel to overcome overwhelming odds and fulfill its mission throughout history.

Witnessing Miracles and Prophecy

For those who may not yet recognize the signs of this era, let us open our eyes to the miracles unfolding before us—from the rebirth of the Jewish state in 1948, through the triumphs of 1967 and 1973, to the victories of today. We are witnessing the ingathering of the exiles and the fulfillment of ancient prophecies. The words of the Torah are alive, and Hashem is guiding us every step of the way toward the realization of His vision for Israel and all humanity. Let us give thanks for the miracles of our time and for the heroes who make them possible.
