Land for Peace

I spent an incredible/impressionable year studying at Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1978-79. The unexpected highlight was the signing of the Camp David Peace Accord (US assisted) between Israel and Egypt on September 17, 1978 (day after Yom Kippur). To secure this highly anticipated deal, Israel conceded to give the Sinai Peninsula (gained October 6, 1973/Yom Kippur war) back to Egypt. Israel retained Gaza.

I had climbed Mt. Sinai (same as Moses) three years prior during my summer in Israel with Ramah. At the end of my year abroad, my boyfriend now husband (who also studied in Israel) and I decided to revisit Sinai before it reverted to Egypt. We took a bus and slept on the beach with sleeping bags; we were 21 and naive!

Giving an important piece of  “real estate” back was sad but I understood the concept “give to get.” Living through this incredibly historic time was exciting yet painful; Jews were forcibly removed from Sinai.

The Key to Lasting Peace

Anwar Sadat (president of Egypt) was a Muslim hero who bravely stepped forward  forging this historic alliance/treaty. Tragically on October 6, 1981 he was assassinated (anniversary ’73 war). This Peace Accord set into motion the path towards peace including Jordan (1994), and four countries currently participating in the Abraham Accords, (September 15, 2020/Yom Kippur eve). Important Note: All six countries; Egypt, Jordan, UAE, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan recognize Israel’s right to exist!

A Grave Mistake

On August 15, 2005 (day after 9th of Av, commemorating the destruction of our Temple and expulsion of Jews from the region) Israel withdrew from Gaza. Once again Jews were forcibly removed. Israel did not demand/require the Palestinian’s acknowledgement of Israel’s right to exist. We gave but did not get!

There was a “conception.” Israel made a calculated decision; maintain semi fluid borders, allow Palestinians to enter with work permits, hoping improved relations between Peoples will follow. Our “conception” deceived/weakened us. We let down our guard. Our “misconception,” Hamas was buying time building a tunnel network. Hope is not a solution.

Gaza

The Tunnels

The history of the tunnels, is complicated. Originally they were primitive and used by Gazans to access goods and family members/citizens through densely populated areas. In 2007 Hamas was voted into power (holding democratic/gun to the head elections). They ran international aid campaigns. Money began pouring in.

Hamas used/stole the billions (comic relief) of dollars in “aid” to build (using child labor) larger/stronger tunnels and enrich themselves. The tunnels were used to smuggle goods, munitions, cause terror, house militia, and imprison hostages, (Sinwar in tunnels, Hamas eating stolen food). The militia was poised to pop up for deadly rounds of wack-a-mole. To get a sense of the tunnels impacting Israel’s security (click), Fauda.

Hamas Lured the IDF into Gaza

Israel did not want to fight. The citizens living in the Gaza Envelope (area near Gaza) relied on safe shelters and Iron Dome to “manage” missiles lobbied from Gaza. Undeterred Israel allowed 20,000 Palestinians to enter daily; enduring “controlled peace” for 20 years.

Many Palestinian/Gazan workers were Hamas spies gathering intel; to locate/murder/kidnap residents in the Gaza Envelope. The IDF found maps and names of employers/friends/victims (Arabic) on terrorists bodies after the massacre in Israel.

When the IDF entered Gaza in retaliation the terrorists were armed and ready; hiding among civilians, in streets, homes, and tunnels situated below hospitals, schools and mosques. Homes were booby trapped; children’s beds sat atop stockpiles of munitions. They found copies of Mein Kampf (Arabic) and children’s books with anti-Semitic themes, Kids Chasing Paradise (Clarion Project).

A Soldier’s Journey and Glimpse into Gaza Envelope Prewar

I discovered two films titled Kissufim. This is a short, produced nine years ago (starring a dear friend) about Kibbutz Kissufim on the Gaza border. It shows the bittersweet reality of an Israeli soldier previously from Gaza (evicted 2005), preparing to go back into Gaza to fight terrorists shooting rockets at Israelis residing in the Gaza Envelope. He is writing a letter home should he get killed.

This second full feature film, (filmed prior to Oct 7) Kissufim (Netflix) shows the kibbutz in 1977; open and beautiful with people traveling back and forth into Gaza. Kissufim was hit hard.

Have you ever considered…

What the Palestinians could have done differently?

1- They could have hoisted their flag and called themselves Palestine.

2- When Hamas came to power, the PA/Palestinian Authority (original ruling body) could/should have reached out for Israel’s help.

What Hamas could have done?

1- Surrendered and returned the hostages.

2- Used billions of dollars in aid to build infra structure; safe shelters for protection, desalinization for fresh water and power plants for energy.

3- Created thriving tourism!

What is Hamas’s strategy?

Hamas’s goal: destroy Israel, kill Jews. Hamas strategy: use Palestinians as human shields. What was the average Gazan supposed to do? Get killed, so the world would be mad at Israel. Its so insane the world refuses/forced by corrupt networks to acknowledge it.

What could Israel have done?

We could have indiscriminately bombed but chose not to. We needed to find/save as many as hostages as possible and minimize loss of civilian life. We value people. Our efforts cost us the lives of nearly 1000 soldiers.

 More questions to consider:

  •  Which world powers/newsmakers have been influenced/corrupted by the evil network/money trail?
  • Who orchestrated the network of anti Jewish/anti Western influencers?

  • Do other countries bordering Israel have tunnels?
  • Did Muslim leaders expressed grief/outrage after Oct 7 when Muslims were slaughtered in Israel alongside Druze (branch of Islam), Jews, Christians, and Buddhist? Or were most silent because they were Israeli Muslim? Are Imams expressing outrage over the slaughter of Muslims by Muslim (Hamas, Hezbolla, Houti) extremist groups in the surrounding Middle Eastern countries?
  • Israel is intentional regarding Peace Accords and withdrawal dates. Is it a coincidence Sinwar waged war on October 7, 2023; the 50th anniversary of October 6, 1973 Yom Kippur War (plus one day Sabbath/Simchat Torah), or 42nd anniversary of Anwar Sadat’s murder on Oct 6, 1981?
  • Does it make sense to give back land without a Peace Accord?
  • Can you locate Israel, Gaza?

Something bothering me…

Why are Jews evacuated from a region each time land is exchanged for peace? A harsh reality; Jews and Christians have been persecuted, tortured, and exiled from  the majority of Muslim countries Faith Keepers (Clarion Project). Imagine in the “name of peace” all Muslims were exiled from Israel? There would be a global outcry. It would be unethical!

Beth Kopin is a trained interior architectural designer from the US. She has experience in the design/construction world that spans thirty years, and works and lives in both Chicago and Arnona, Jerusalem. She commutes regularly between the two cities. She brings her work ethic, training and US standards to Israel. Beth has surrounded herself with extremely talented trades. Her design team developed a way to CAD (computer aided design) plans in both US and metric standards. This enables both the US born clients (some of which live in Israel, some as second homes), and Israeli trades to better understand the plans, ensuring a more fluid communication. She is able to help bridge the gap of cultural differences, manage expectations, relate often confusing metric standards, as well as all the basic elements of designing a beautiful and functional home.
