Iranian freedom cancelled
The US has sold out Iran's civil society to cut a shallow deal with an Islamist dictatorship
In my devastation about the historic tragedy that the Geneva deal is, I turned yesterday to Marius Müller Westernhagen’s Freedom song. This outstanding German musician performed his song when the Berlin wall came down and part of the lyric says: “Freedom has been cancelled.”
The Geneva deal is nothing less than Iranian freedom cancelled. Why so? A lifeline of precious sanctions relief has been thrown to a dying dictatorship. A prestigious political legitimacy has been thrown to a brutal dictatorship that isn’t capable to represent Iran’s national interest and what the Iranian people long for. A floodgate has been opened in our tough global sanctions regime – we will see it crumbling piece by piece in the coming months.
All of this while the Islamic Republic will continue to betray world powers on its nuclear activities gaining valuable time to reach the bomb. The Supreme Leader Khamenei has received an early Christmas gift this weekend – nuke armed survival for his ruthless regime. Delivered to him by a former law professor who as an American President shredded several United Nations Security Council resolutions that asked specifically for uranium enrichment to end – among many other rightful demands that have now been blown away.
This is not a victory of diplomacy, it is a victory of political amnesia. Conflicts like this one can only be solved once and forever when there is a change of regime. Remember Libya? Remember how the world failed to prevent nuclear weapons in the hands of North Korea?
The American President has pushed forward with his appeasement agenda despite rightful Israeli security concerns. To me Barack Obama has entered history books as a US leader who not only let the Syrian genocide happen, but also sold out Iran’s civil society to cut a brief and shallow deal with an Islamist dictatorship.
So to me everyone who’s celebrating this dangerous deal is standing on the wrong side of history. The permanent and peaceful solution to this crisis is something that only Iran’s democrats languishing in the darkest prison cells can and will deliver. They have been let down fundamentally.
