Israeli contemporary art, accessible to everyone with “Under A Thousand Gallery”
Two years have already gone since the gallery based on an attractive concept established its presence in the nonconformist Florentine neighborhood. Under A Thousand Gallery is the gallery that sells Israeli contemporary art for prices under a thousand dollars. From Kadishman to Tumarkin, going through the Street Art artists and the emerging scene, Under A Thousand knew to present itself to the Israeli public as a reference gallery offering a wide range by exhibiting almost one hundred and seventy artists, with a variety of more than a thousand artworks at prices accessible to everyone. For Eli Edri, the gallery owner, the idea is to offer to the young artists a place to exhibit and to the visitors the chance to acquire original works for every budget; art as part of the interior design is democratic. Building on his success, a new space opened in the highly regarded Dan Design Center, in Bnei Brak, in the very center of design and decoration.
This Tuesday, April 26th, there will be a presentation of the artist Bazooka Joe and his work, around his new exhibition “From there to here,” directed by the renowned Israeli dancer and choreographer Ido Tadmor. The painter, a man who grew up in dicey, dark neighborhoods, together with prostitutes at home in a world full of hard drugs, leading to crime and prison, where he spent half of his life.
How did a person at the bottom of the ladder, a person with a dark and hard past, become one of the most promising artists of the contemporary art? How could he become a support for addicts and the homeless in only seven years? How did a pariah, an unwanted child, become one of the most sought for artists in Tel Aviv? It was through his numerous exhibitions and sold paintings – of which one was sold at Tirosh in an auction – and through the interest of the collectors and wide public.
This exhibition emphasizes the creative evolution of the artist during these past seven years. While he has never studied the painting techniques in a formal way, he follows his keen eye and his inspiration. Inspired particularly by Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo and Jean-Michel Basquiat – artists also known for their serious substance abuse problem – Bazooka Joe has created his own universe, built around “third sex” characters. In his view, man and woman are one and in this sense they are one and the same person.
Outstanding visual experience; it is recommended to reserve a place in advance as space is limited.
