Israeli guilt and innocence regarding the October 7 pogrom from Gaza

The time of reckoning is coming closer

It is very clear that the guilt lies with the Antisemites bent on genocide.

Yet, it must also be determined if anyone in the State of Israel can be charged with carelessness. Many probes will study what happened.

It should be clear that not all mistakes can count as negligence. Making mistakes is part of doing any important job. But is there culpability?

And even when some neglect would make someone liable, that doesn’t automatically translate into a conviction. Sometimes, there’s no proof.

Some, but not all, of the understandably frustrated and furious hostage families freely assigning blame. That too might not hold up in court.

Collectively, political Israel had been in the dark. Almost everybody assumed a tactic of appeasement and deterrence would suffice. No Jew could imagine that you must neutralize every eager mass murderer.

Yes, there were a couple of dissidents, but they were general ‘hard-liners,’ so they neutralized their own warnings by overstating everything.

What is remarkable—I think—is that Netanyahu immediately understood the collective professional guilt, with him as Israel’s political leader having much responsibility even for mistakes he didn’t make himself, but that from October 7, that didn’t count yet. First, save the nation and chase and destroy the enemy. As Rabbi Nachman of Breslau says, ‘If you can ruin it, you can repair it.’ And we’re still in the midst of that, but it’s getting better.

Maybe religious Jews have a bit of a different position. On the one hand, we learn Jewish history like no other—so we should have known better. On the other hand, it’s easier not to blame Jews but say, ‘G^d needed this min-Holocaust to happen on our way to Redemption. I did the best I could. An earthly and a Heavenly judge will tell me if that was enough.’

Rather, mainly basing himself on the basic Hebrew Torah text, he tries to rediscover classical Jewish thought almost lost in thousands of years of stifling Gentile domination and Jewish assimilation.
