Israeli Jews against nationalist supremacy!

Israel haters should have a good time with the new Nation-State Law that makes Israel more Jewish but fails to mention equality of all of its minorities.

Druze, Bedouin and Arab representatives in Israel have now filed protests against the law at the Israeli High Court of Justice. That’s what we need to say to people outside of Israel who criticize Israel for this new law: We don’t need your correction – we have a vibrant democracy with capable rights groups for every issue, making plenty of noise and having a wonderful impact. And the Israeli Supreme Court has a wonderful human rights record. It will all work out – especially without outside interference, thank you.

We really don’t need outside interference, thank you, like this anti-Semitic cartoon

But there is more. A recent poll showed that 60% of Israelis don’t want any supremacy in our laws. That means that besides the above groups, regular Jewish Israelis also need to petition the High Court against inequality in the new law. We are a relevant party here too. Not in my name!

Don’t you hate it when only Jews stand up against anti-Semitism and don’t you love it when Gentile allies chip in and stand with us?

Besides, if an apartheid law, or even a law with “only” the stench of apartheid, is effectuated in Israel, we Israeli Jews are the biggest losers. We must not be supremacists, not mostly because the poor minorities would suffer but firstly because it’s an embarrassment to us.

Therefore, I want Israeli Jewish organizations, preferably not just the Left-wing opposition, the Loony Left or the Loony religious, to jointly petition against this new law too, as Israeli Jews, as people of Decency, who do not want to live under any sort of apartheid.

The present Knesset is toothless and – as I recently blogged – Netanyahu has lost it, so we should not wait for them to come around. It’s up to us.
