What do the choices for the West Bank and Gaza mean for Israel’s long-term security, and where do the political parties stand?

Israel’s 27 October election involves many important issues. But few may have greater long-term consequences than decisions concerning the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) and Gaza.

What are Israel’s realistic options? What are their likely costs, benefits and consequences for its security and future?

Useful research already exists.

In February 2020, just before Covid hit, Dr Shira Efron and Evan Gottesman published the Israel Policy Forum’s comparative study, In Search of a Viable Option. It’s still useful but dated.

For this election, the Israel Policy Forum has also published 2026 Election Blocs Explained, summarizing the parties, their leaders and key policy positions.

A warning from Israeli security veterans

In May 2026, Commanders for Israel’s Security (CIS) joined other organizations in petitioning Israel’s Supreme Court over government measures they characterized as de facto annexation. CIS argued that the government should assess the security consequences and inform the Israeli public of those risks. The petition is reportedly still open, with no final ruling identified. Read the CIS security memorandum 8 May 2026

The public have a need and right to know not only about the implications of annexation, but also the costs and benefits of the main options being discussed,  how they compare, and especially now, how these options match up with the policies of various parties.

How to easily conduct your own comprehensive AI-assisted comparison of the options

I’ve developed the AI Research Brief image prompt above to examine nine strategic options against six common criteria, with Israel’s long-term security as the overriding consideration.

Hover over the featured image, click to enlarge it, then copy or save it and upload or past it to ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok or another capable AI chat then simply submit it. You can also add your own additional text prompt along with the image. For example:

In addition, identify those Israeli political parties whose policies best match your preferred option, in order from best match.

While I have tried to make the AI image prompt robust, AI isn’t infallible. Check its sources, challenge its assumptions, and compare it with different AIs and analyses.

Look beyond campaign promises. Explore the evidence, examine the parties’ positions to make a more informed choice about Israel’s security and future.

If you do use the AI Image prompt, I, and I’m sure others would love to hear how it went in the comments.
