It’s Worth the Fight

**TRIGGER WARNING: Sexual Abuse

There are the monsters under the bed we sometimes imagine when we are young, and then unfortunately, there are sometimes the all too real ones that inflict damage and pain. We can’t protect everyone; but Amudim will always work tirelessly to ensure that those who have been hurt have somewhere to turn during or after their dark times.

Yael* was dealt a tough hand in life. Sexually abused by both her uncle and first husband, the pain and trauma she had endured in childhood seemed to have followed her into the next stage of life. Thankfully, her first marriage was short lived; and two years later, Yael found herself married to a caring and kind man and expecting her first child. But after the birth, Yael was suffering from severe postpartum depression, and she and her husband realized they needed help.

The couple’s rav suggested they call Amudim, especially knowing Yael’s backstory and that it might never have been fully addressed. After a complex intake, our case manager observed that Yael’s recovery would be twofold. She first needed to deal with and find a way past the trauma of the sexual abuse; and then she would need to continue with therapy to gain the necessary tools and support to manage her anxiety and depression. Yael and her husband’s insurance did not cover the fees of the trauma specialist we felt would best fit her multiple needs; and we were able to refer them to Project Heal, funded magnanimously by our community of donors for victims of sexual abuse, so that Yael’s sessions would be partially covered.

It took some encouragement and compassion to help Yael find the courage to begin the long journey towards facing her demons and healing; but she is a survivor and was determined to find peace for herself and her new family. We are hopeful that in time, Yael will discover a new sense of hope for her future. Our case manager remains in contact with the couple to ensure they are doing well and offer any necessary assistance.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
