Jacob and Esau are the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil

Jacob and Esau are the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and Israel is the Tree of Life. Both Jacob and Esau have the potential to become Israel…

The Sibling Rivalry

The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil represents struggle between Good and Evil, and it goes without saying that Evil must be subdued by Good, it follows that Esau represents the direction of Evil and Jacob represents the direction of Good, for the elder shall serve the younger (Gen 25:23), meaning the elder (Evil) shall be subdued by the younger (Good).

Esau represents the seed of the snake and Jacob represents the seed of the woman, and the judgement is that the seed of the snake shall bruise the head of the seed of the woman, and the seed of the woman shall bruise the heel of the seed of the snake.

Surprisingly at the birth, Esau was the first born, with Jacob grasping the heel of Esau, meaning Esau was bruising the head of Jacob, and Jacob was bruising the heel of Esau, the order was reversed.

Therefore, it may be deduced that the birth order was the opposite of what’s been intended, that Jacob should have been the first-born.

This theory can be confirmed by the birth of the twins from Tamar, which essentially was the rectification of the twins from Rebekah. The first-born put out his hand to be bound with the red thread, symbolizing Esau the red hand, who then voluntarily drew back to the womb in order for Pharez to break forth as the first-born.

Leah to Esau and Rachel to Jacob

The original plan was for Leah to be married to Esau and Rachel to Jacob, until the human free will got the upper hand through trickery.

The original plan was intended to rectify the sin of Adam and Eve eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, as can be illustrated by the following gematria:

Jacob, Rachel

Bilhah

Esau, Leah

Zilpah

יַעֲקֹב רָחֵל

בִּלְהָה

עֵשָׂו לֵאָה

זִלְפָּה

Rachel’s Struggle, Jacob’s Struggle

Both Rachel and Jacob have struggled with Elohim and human being, and both have prevailed.

With respect to Rachel, it is written:

נַפְתּוּלֵי אֱלֹהִים נִפְתַּלְתִּי עִם-אֲחֹתִי גַּם-יָכֹלְתִּי With Elohim I have wrestled, and I have wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed (Gen 30:8)

Similarly, it is written concerning Jacob:

כִּי-שָׂרִיתָ עִם-אֱלֹהִים וְעִם-אֲנָשִׁים, וַתּוּכָל for thou hast striven with Elohim and with men, and hast prevailed. (Gen 32:29)

When Rachel prevailed, the new-born was named Naphtali; when Jacob prevailed, he was like a new-born worthy of being called Israel.

Rachel wrestled with Leah, and Jacob wrestled with Esau, as it were.

The verb used for Rachel’s victory is יָכֹלְתִּי, and the verb used for Jacob’s victory is וַתּוּכָל,the sum is 932, exactly the gematria of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil:

I have prevailed יָכֹלְתִּי 470
And you have prevailed וַתּוּכָל 462
  932

Meaning, the struggle of Rachel and Jacob has rectified the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, but how?

Rachel Loved Leah, and Jacob Loved Esau

The rectification is by love, unconditional love, love your neighbor as yourself.

It is well established by the Rabbis that Rachel loved Leah and through her merit she was buried at the roadside in order for God to bring back the exile.

But where can we see Jacob loved Esau?

In this week’s Parashah, it is evident that Jacob initiated the rectification by sending angels to Esau, for Jacob’s entry to the Land of Canaan was through Ford Jabbok, which is on the east side, and Esau dwelled in Edom which is to the south, and it is not possible for Jacob to chance upon Esau unless, of course, when he sent the angels to Esau as a sort of invitation to meet.

Why did Jacob do this?

There are three events of crying that connect the Esau and Jacob story. When Jacob supplanted Esau’s blessing, Esau cried, וַיִּצְעַק (Gen 27:34), because of this crying, Esau hated Jacob and wanted to kill him and Jacob had to flee to Laban, where he met Rachel for the first time, and he cried, וַיֵּבְךְּ (Gen 29:11), this is the tear of exile, as it were, due to Esau’s hatred.

When the twins met again after the exile, both cried, וַיִּבְכּוּ (Gen 33:4).

The gematria of the tree instances of crying is astonishingly:

Esau’s Crying וַיִּצְעַק 276
Jacob’s Crying וַיֵּבְךְּ 38
The Twins’ Crying וַיִּבְכּוּ 44
  358

358 is the gematria of Mashiach מָּשִׁיחַ, meaning the reconciliation of the two brothers ushers in the coming of Mashiach, at the end of the exile.

Who is the Angel

According to Rashi, the angel that wrestled with Jacob is Esau’s guardian angel, known as Samael, also known as Satan.

Why do they have to wrestle in the night? I would propose that night symbolizes the womb where the cosmic twin had wrestled in the first place.

In the same way that Jacob held onto the heel of Esau at the birth, so did the angel touch the hollow of Jacob’s thigh, at the breaking of dawn, symbolizing the time of the birth.

Heel and hollow of thigh are the two ends of the leg, and astonishingly, the gematria of both is 502, which is exactly the spelling out of Esau, and also the sum of Edom and Ishmael:

Heel, Hollow of the thigh עֲקֵב כַּף-יֶרֶךְ 502
Esau עֵשָׂוspelled out עין שין וו 502
Edom, Ishmael אֱדוֹם יִשְׁמָעֵאל 502

This comes to teach us that the attack from the angel represents the attack from Esau prior to the final redemption, which can also be intensified as the attack of Edom and Ishmael.

Even more astonishingly, the gematria of Jacob and Satan face to face is 932, which is exactly the gematria of Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil:

Jacob Satan Face to Face יַעֲקֹב שָׂטָן פָּנִים אֶל פָּנִים 932
Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil עֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע 932

But surprisingly, the union of Jacob and Edom is the Tree of Life:

Jacob, Edom יַעֲקֹב אֱדוֹם 233
Tree of Life עֵץ הַחַיִּים 233

Why?

While the struggle between Jacob and Satan face to face represents the struggle of man to choose the Good from the Evil of the Tree of Knowledge, by Jacob conquering Satan, i.e. evil inclination, in order to be reconciled with his estranged brother Edom, the result is the Tree of Life.

Should Leah be married to Esau, the union may have rectified the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, but it did not happen, and the task was left for Jacob and Rachel to finish, both have wrestled and both have prevailed, and two names emerged as a result, Naphtali and Israel.

The gematria below is most astonishingly:

Leah Esau

Tree of Knowledge

 of Good and Evil

לֵאָה עֵשָׂו

עֵץ הַדַּעַת

טוֹב וָרָע

1344
Naphtali

Israel

Tree of Life

נַפְתָּלִי

יִשְׂרָאֵל

עֵץ הַחַיִּים

1344

Where do we see both Esau and Jacob have the potential to become Israel?

The two would-be happy families plus the gematria of God is 1082:

Jacob

Rachel

Bilhah

יַעֲקֹב

רָחֵל

בִּלְהָה

462
Esau

Leah

Zilpah

עֵשָׂו

לֵאָה

זִלְפָּה

534
God אֱלֹהִים 86
  1082

And the average number of two would-be happy families is 1082 / 2 = 541, which is the gematria of Israel יִשְׂרָאֵל.

Israel יִשְׂרָאֵל is also called Jeshurunיְשֻׁרוּן. The first three letters are the same for both names, i.e. ישׁר, meaning upright, the suffix for Israel is -el אֵל, and the suffix for Jeshurun is -unוּן, both suffixes are used for naming angels.

Jacob means crooked and Israel means upright, as it is written:

וְהָיָה הֶעָקֹב לְמִישׁוֹר And the crooked shall be made upright…(Isa 40:4)

When YHVH is added to Isaac and Rebekah, the result is Israel, meaning a partnership between God and men produces Israel:

YHVH

Isaac

Rebekah

יְהוָה

יִצְחָק

רִבְקָה

541
Israel יִשְׂרָאֵל 541

Esau is also called Edom, and the three names produce Jeshurun, meaning, even Edom has the potential for elevation to the level of Jeshurun:

Isaac

Rebekah

Edom

יִצְחָק

רִבְקָה

אֱדוֹם

566
Jshurun יְשֻׁרוּן 566

And of course, the rectified one family lives happily ever after, producing both Israel and Jeshurun:

Isaac

Rebekah

Israel

Edom

יִצְחָק

רִבְקָה

יִשְׂרָאֵל

אֱדוֹם

1107
Israel

Jeshurun

יִשְׂרָאֵל

יְשֻׁרוּן

1107
