My Israeli life in Switzerland as I cheer for Yuval Raphael at Eurovision 2025

As an Israeli who spent several years living in Switzerland, I resonate deeply with Yuval Raphael, our Eurovision representative for 2025. Like Yuval, who spent part of her life in Geneva, my own journey involved leaving the Hasidic community in Jerusalem to embark on my first adventure away from home: studying at the prestigious Jewish seminary ‘Sem Luzern.’ This leap into the unknown would change my life forever.

During my education in Switzerland, I volunteered every Sunday in Zurich, helping Jewish families with their children. I also connected with the local Jewish community in Basel, where I often spent Shabbat. This connection provided me with a sense of belonging that made Switzerland feel a little more like home.

Now, as Yuval takes the stage for the Eurovision second semi-finals this Thursday with her song ‘New Day Will Rise,’ her emotional power ballad encapsulates her journey in every note. This song is not just about the music; it represents a powerful narrative of surviving the October 7 massacre at the Nova music festival, where her life was saved while she hid under a pile of dead bodies for eight hours until she was rescued.

While Eurovision has always been a vibrant celebration of music and culture, political tensions have started to rise, and the Israeli National Security Council has advised delegates traveling to Switzerland to avoid wearing Jewish or Israeli symbols.

In the face of such challenges, I believe in the power of community and support. If Yuval has the opportunity to spend another Shabbat in Basel, where approximately 860 Jews reside, I would encourage her to connect with the local Jewish community, known for its warm and welcoming spirit. This would allow for a genuine exchange where her personal story of survival can shine, fostering deeper connections to bridge the gap between the local Jewish community and Israel.
