‘Normal life’ in Israel these days? There’s nothing normal about any of it

So, it’s like this.

A source I highly respect confirmed that Iran was going to attack us last night. Now, thankfully he was dead wrong on this one.

But that didn’t stop me from getting my safe room ready, for the umpteenth time. And that didn’t stop me from dashing to the makolet to stock up on lollipops (for an anxious 3 year old) and water and snacks (Snacks make everything better 🙂 )

I was even thinking of bringing whiskey into the safe room, but I thought that was just a little nuts (plus I was too busy panicking, so I wasn’t exactly thinking straight.)

It’s a funny thing though – Last time, when Iran attacked Israel, we didn’t get much warning. Many of us were cooking for the upcoming three day (gasp!) Holiday that was coming up [Rosh Hashanah].

So, when the sirens went off, we dutifully scrambled into the safe room. My kids were pretty chill actually. Even the 3 year old survived, thanks to Subway Surf and the requisite lollipop.

In fact, I was the only one who was freaked out, which is weird, considering the fact that I am supposed to be the calm and composed parent.

But, back to the makolet. As I was rummaging for essential lollipops, it struck me that there is nothing normal about this situation. There is nothing normal about buying treats to prepare for an upcoming missile launch from an enemy country, who just doesn’t seem to quite get the message (Yup Iran, I’m looking at you) and keeps coming after us.

There is nothing normal about prepping my safe room as we wait to be attacked.

There is nothing normal about any of this, to be honest.

But, living in Israel for the past nearly 17 years has taught me this:

Nothing will get us down. Nothing. Not Iran, not Hamas, not Hezbollah. As we have been forced to do for the last 5000 years, we will rise again, better and stronger than ever before.

אין לי ארץ אחרת

אין לי עם אחר

Thank you G-d for the privilege of living in Your chosen land.
