Two months ago, a defamation suit has been won against the author of a book that claimed the Sandy Hook shooting never happened. And now, also a second case was won against a radio host who needs to pay up for his shows stating that the bereaved were just fakers. This should have implications for all those who slander under the disguise of Free Speech.
Women, blue-collar workers, youths, GLBTQs, non-Whites, Jews, the handicapped, and anyone and any group of vulnerable people should start suing anyone and any outlet defaming or hurting them.
Every right must have its limits. You can’t let anti-democrats participate in democratic elections. That’s anti-democratic. To block such people standing for office is protecting democracy, not ‘undemocratic.’
The right to bear arms cannot mean that anyone everywhere can have their hands on a firearm or own tanks and military planes with rockets.
Correspondingly, the right to Free Speech does not give license to insult, injure or intimidate. Sue all bigots till they have no money left for food.
These two case were extreme and further lawsuits should first target the most extreme haters. But eventually, in a democracy, no one should feel free to insult anyone else — especially not (from) socially weak groups.
It might also help to teach the public to be less gullible concerning what they ‘hear’ from social and internet media. But only doing that, would be like making houses more fire-proof while not going after pyromaniacs.
