Old Age: Speaking Out Against Trump

Like Israel, American politics is in a desperate condition.  But Israel’s need for a just and fair government in America is profound and her very survival would be impossible without America.  Hence the terrible fear of electing Donald Trump.  The parallels to Hitler are ominous and omnipresent.

One doesn’t have to be a paranoid to fear Trumpism.  As a matter of fact supporting Trump is the true paranoia.  Trumpism is the politics of fear. Fear of the “other.”  In a nation built by the “others” Trump is inciting hatred of the values that make America America.  It’s just unbelievable that Americans with any degree of historical perspective can believe the pathetic rhetoric of Donald Trump.

Yesterday I attended our granddaughter’s graduation from Binghamton University.  Binghamton is part of the State University of New York system and is arguably regarded as the SUNY ivy.  It’s a large school and there were many thousands of both graduates and family members. It’s also, like New York, and like Israel,a diverse place, a veritable babble, or should I say Babel, of culture and language.  The student body is Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, and just about every other religion known to man.  They are also agnostic and atheist.  Their roots are from lands and cultures around the world including, in Trumpian rhetoric, Mexican rapists and Muslim terrorists.  Many of them, in fact, are the Trumpian “others.” Yet, they are a magnificent blend of youth, idealism, intellect and striving. They will build and work and create and fulfill the American dream.  They are just like the people that Donald Trump would leave behind a wall or stranded in refugee camps. Their parents may be illegal immigrants. Their parents may have arrived on the shores of America by foot, or in ships like the Exodus, or on planes like in Operation Magic Carpet. Yet they became “of” this country and yesterday they sang the national anthem with fervor and conviction.

Donald Trump is trying to convince Americans that their problems will be solved with benign simplicity.  The real problem is that belief in him is not benign and his solutions are far from simple……or just or fair or right.

Jews: it’s your obligation to remember and, if you are an American citizen, to vote against the horrors of Trumpism. Israel needs you! Register. Vote.
