Parshat Chayei Sarah 5785

In this week Parsha, Parshat Chayei Sarah. Avraham commands Eliezer his servant to find a wife for Yitzchak and he tells him not to take a wife for him from among the women of Canaan. But rather go back to my birthplace and take a wife from among the members of my family.

This is a bit perplexing because both The Canaanites and Avraham’s family outside the land of Canaan were Idolaters. So why at least in this regard Yitzchak would not be getting into a better family situation.

There was a characteristic trait that Avraham’s family excelled in, even the ones who were still idolaters. That was loving kindness. The Canaanites had no problem with the evil actions of Sodom and Amora. While Avraham’s family could never fathom being evil like that even if that hadn’t fully did Teshuva yet.

May we only do things that involves loving kindness and continue being the Kingdom of Priests. And a Holy Nation.

This Divrei Torah was based off a Dvar Torah written by Rabbi Berel Wein may he live and be well.
