The Heritage Foundation gathered dozens of signatures from prominent veterans in under 24 hours, endorsing Pete Hegseth’s nomination. James Jay Carafano, Rob Greenway, Wilson Beaver, Steve Bucci, and Jeremy Hayes—decorated military veterans and advisers or fellows at the Heritage Foundation—added their signatures to the letter.

In a time when global threats demand unwavering leadership, the nomination of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense marks a turning point for America’s national security strategy. Hegseth is not just another bureaucratic appointee; he is a battle-tested veteran with a clear vision to restore military readiness, combat inefficiency, and decisively address the nation’s adversaries. While critics have sought to derail his confirmation with allegations that lack substantial evidence, his qualifications, leadership style, and commitment to the core mission of the Department of Defense (DoD) make him the right man for this pivotal role.

A Proven Warrior and Advocate for Veterans

Hegseth’s military credentials speak for themselves. As a decorated combat veteran, he has served with distinction in some of the most volatile regions in the world, including Iraq and Afghanistan. Earning two Bronze Stars and a Combat Infantryman Badge, Hegseth exemplifies the qualities of courage and leadership that are vital for a Secretary of Defense. His service as an Infantry Officer in the Army National Guard has provided him with firsthand experience of the challenges faced by American troops on the ground. He knows the sacrifices made by service members and understands the pressing need for policies that prioritize their safety and effectiveness.

Beyond the battlefield, Hegseth has been an unwavering advocate for veterans, championing reforms in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to ensure better care and resources for those who have served. His commitment to veterans demonstrates his broader understanding of the human element in defense—a perspective that will guide his policies as Secretary of Defense.

A Vision for a Combat-Ready Military

One of Hegseth’s most compelling qualities is his determination to refocus the military on its core warfighting mission. Over the past decade, the U.S. military has faced criticism for becoming bogged down by bureaucratic inefficiencies and distracted by divisive cultural and ideological debates. Hegseth has been vocal about the need to depoliticize the armed forces, rejecting initiatives that he sees as undermining unity and readiness. His emphasis on restoring a combat-ready force resonates with millions of Americans who believe that the military’s primary function is to defend the nation, not to serve as a platform for social experimentation.

Hegseth’s reformist agenda includes tackling the bloated bureaucracy within the Pentagon, addressing inefficiencies in procurement processes, and ensuring that taxpayer dollars are spent effectively. His critiques of cost overruns and delays in delivering critical defense systems reflect a practical approach to improving military readiness. By holding the defense industrial base accountable and demanding results, Hegseth aims to ensure that America’s troops have the ships, planes, and munitions needed to face evolving threats.

A Strategic Response to Global Adversaries

As the world grows increasingly unstable, the U.S. needs a Secretary of Defense who understands the complexities of modern warfare and has the resolve to confront adversaries. Hegseth’s hardline stance against terrorism, the Iranian regime, and great-power competitors like China and Russia positions him as a leader prepared to address the most pressing threats to national security.

In combating Islamic terrorism networks, Hegseth’s combat experience equips him to oversee precision military operations, strengthen alliances with regional partners, and disrupt funding channels that sustain groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda. His commitment to supporting allies and deploying advanced technologies to dismantle these networks will be crucial in maintaining global stability.

Regarding Iran’s regime, Hegseth has consistently advocated for robust measures to counter Tehran’s destabilizing activities in the Middle East. His focus on sanctions, targeting proxy forces, and bolstering missile defense systems underscores his strategic understanding of the Iranian threat. At a time when Iran continues to pursue its nuclear ambitions and expand its regional influence, Hegseth’s leadership would ensure a strong and decisive U.S. response.

Enhancing Intelligence Capabilities through the DIA

As Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth would play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic priorities of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), a cornerstone of U.S. defense intelligence. His combat experience and reform-driven mindset position him to ensure the DIA delivers actionable intelligence to address the most pressing national security threats. Hegseth’s leadership could prioritize counterterrorism efforts, particularly against Islamic terrorist networks, while enhancing intelligence-gathering on adversaries like Iran, Russia, and China.

Hegseth would also likely champion modernization within the DIA, advocating for advanced technologies like AI and cyber tools to improve intelligence collection and analysis. Additionally, his emphasis on accountability and efficiency aligns with streamlining DIA operations, ensuring intelligence is delivered effectively to combatant commands and policymakers. By integrating the DIA’s capabilities into a cohesive national defense strategy, Hegseth would ensure that the U.S. remains prepared to confront both traditional and emerging threats on the global stage.

Personally, based on 15 years of field experience in the Middle East, I believe everyone should support Hegseth in this mission and journey to ensure the DIA operates better, faster, and stronger than before in counterterrorism efforts, safeguarding the lives of American forces in the Middle East. I have no doubt that Hegseth deeply understands this importance and holds heartfelt respect for counterterrorism experts.

A Reformist with a Vision for Efficiency

Hegseth’s critics have attempted to paint him as a divisive figure, citing allegations of personal misconduct. However, these claims lack substantiation and do not diminish his professional qualifications or his ability to lead the Department of Defense effectively. In fact, his resilience in the face of such attacks demonstrates the strength of character required for a role as demanding as Secretary of Defense.

Hegseth’s reformist mindset is particularly significant in the context of the Pentagon’s challenges. His willingness to confront entrenched bureaucracies and streamline defense processes aligns with the need for a more agile and responsive military. By cutting through red tape and holding defense contractors accountable, Hegseth would ensure that the DoD operates efficiently and delivers results.

A Champion for Service Members and Families

Hegseth’s commitment to service members extends beyond the battlefield. His advocacy for better living conditions, mental health support, and career opportunities for troops and their families highlights his holistic approach to defense leadership. He understands that a strong military depends not only on advanced weaponry but also on the well-being of those who serve.

His emphasis on veterans’ welfare reflects his broader dedication to the men and women in uniform. By prioritizing programs that support veterans’ transition to civilian life and ensuring that their sacrifices are honored, Hegseth would reinforce the bond of trust between the military and the nation it serves.

An Inspiring and Charismatic Leader

Hegseth’s charisma and media presence make him a powerful communicator—a quality that is essential for rallying support for defense initiatives and maintaining public trust. His ability to articulate a clear vision for the military and connect with both service members and civilians sets him apart as a leader who can inspire confidence and unity.

Moreover, his faith-driven values and dedication to family underscore his integrity and commitment to serving the nation. These personal qualities, combined with his professional experience, position him as a role model for the next generation of military leaders.

The Right Leader at the Right Time

Pete Hegseth’s nomination for Secretary of Defense comes at a critical juncture for the United States. As the nation faces mounting global threats and internal challenges, his leadership offers a path forward rooted in strength, efficiency, and a clear sense of purpose. Hegseth’s military credentials, reformist mindset, and dedication to service members make him uniquely qualified to lead the Department of Defense.

While detractors may attempt to undermine his nomination with unproven allegations, the focus should remain on his proven record of leadership and his vision for restoring America’s military might. Pete Hegseth is not just a nominee—he is a leader ready to defend the nation and ensure its security for generations to come. His confirmation would send a powerful message to allies and adversaries alike: America stands strong, united, and prepared to face the challenges of the future.
