It is getting uglier before it is getting better.
Just as with racism in the US. It increased under Obama though he was reelected with great numbers. It’s not enough to promote the underdog and break glass ceilings. We specifically need to argue bigots until they become, in the eyes of the vast majority, merely a ridiculous sect.
Pride Month in Israel for years already riles up the homophobes to speak their vile minds. The arrogance of these haters is most telling. People of standing who consider themselves decent say things you would not expect (or accept) from the drunkest.
But there is more than just a passing wave of hatred.
Gay-haters were warmly welcomed into the Israeli government. It resulted in a record number of attacks on LGBTQIA+s. Forget about pinkwashing. While the Israeli embassy in Washington threw an LGBTQ Pride party, the Israeli street, public opinion, and atmosphere in communities and families have become far less safe for expressions of honesty and authenticity.
Israel just tumbled from the 23rd to the 83rd place in the global gender equality index. Just like spouse abuse is often found together with child abuse, public unsafety for women and LGBTQIA+ also seem related.
LGBTQIA+ became an integral part of the anti-judicial overhaul movement, side-by-side with Muslims and stop the occupation radicals. That is good. But as Obama’s presidency shows, acceptance and integration of oppressed groups are not enough. In the beginning, things will get worse.
The debate is now if biases against women and LGBTQ are types of racism, apartheid, or a crime against humanity. But for sure, women, Gays, and Trans rights are human rights. As long as they’re unsafe, no one is safe.
Please keep up the fight for true equality and democracy.
Here are messages of hope, support, and guidance.
