Standing Together for Israel’s Reservists: A Call for Community Solidarity

A group of people may have similar values or ideals, but what truly elevates a group of people into a community is communal solidarity – standing together with those in need – and communal engagement – taking practical actions to assist those in need. And in times of need, strong communities are those which step up to face challenges head-on.

Over the past 14 months, Israel has been through a lot. It has faced the tragic events of October 7, and endured long months of war, of rocket attacks, and of family and friends leaving home to serve in miluim (military reserve duty).

At the same time, Israel has seen an unprecedented level of communal solidarity and engagement, from crowdfunding campaigns to buy essential equipment for soldiers, to grassroots initiatives to barbecue for units on the front lines, to local campaigns to support the wives and families of reservists.

And the beauty of community engagement is that it creates bonds that go far beyond material assistance. It reminds us that each of us has a role to play, no matter the size of our contribution. By coming together, we develop a collective strength that provides not just material support, but also the emotional reinforcement people need in challenging times.

Whether it’s donating to a project, volunteering, or simply raising awareness, every act of solidarity creates a ripple effect.

Every act of solidarity tells our reservists and their families: You’re not alone. We are here for you.

This kind of connection has the power to transform not only the lives of those receiving support but also those giving it. When we actively engage in helping others, we strengthen our shared humanity and create a culture of empathy and action. It’s not just about solving immediate problems – it’s about building a community where no one feels left behind.

Through these efforts, the global Jewish community also sets an example for future generations, teaching them the importance of stepping up for one another. By prioritizing community engagement, we create a legacy of kindness and solidarity that will endure far beyond any single crisis. It’s a reminder that, as a society, our strength lies not in individual efforts alone, but in our ability to come together and make a difference as a community.

For Israel’s reservists putting their lives on the line, the last thing they should have to worry about is how they’ll pay their mortgage, cover day-to-day expenses, or keep their business afloat. This is where solidarity from Jews around the world becomes indispensable.

Ogen’s ‘Yuval Fund’ exemplifies the potential of community-driven support. Established in memory of fallen soldier Yuval Silber, the fund provides interest-free loans to reservists facing financial hardship. These loans offer immediate relief to help families manage essential expenses, from groceries to unforeseen bills.

One of the unique strengths of the Yuval Fund is how it represents one of the highest ‘levels’ of charitable giving. According to Maimonides, “the greatest level [of charity] … is to strengthen the hand of a Jew who has become poor and give him a gift or loan… so as to strengthen his hand until he does not need to ask others [for help]”. Additionally, a one-time donation to the fund can create lasting impact: as loans are repaid, the same funds are recycled to help other reservists in need. This sustainable model turns individual acts of generosity into a continuous chain of support.

In response to the ongoing war and the unprecedented need, the Yuval Fund has already provided hundreds of loans, totaling more than $4 million, to reservists and their families. However, applications for support from the fund have increased by 250%, which is why Ogen has doubled down on its efforts, with a renewed fundraising campaign to expand the Yuval Fund’s reach and bring the global Jewish community on board with our mission.

Ogen’s interest-free loan model is a testament to what can be achieved when philanthropy and community support come together. Now, more than ever, we have an opportunity to strengthen the bonds that hold us together. Through the Yuval Fund, we’re not just easing financial burdens; we’re reinforcing the spirit of unity that defines us as a global Jewish People.

My birthday happens to be this week, and I can think of no greater birthday wish than this: let’s honor the bravery of Israel’s reservists by standing shoulder-to-shoulder with them and their families. Together, we can ensure that those who protect us are never left to face their challenges alone.
