There is a distinct number of Members of Knesset who will jump at every chance to spew their hatred for one group or person or the other.
The Palestinian Authority’s top negotiator suddenly became gravely ill with corona and fled to one of Israel’s best hospitals. So, no surprise when one such an MK felt a need to criticize this healing irrespective of who one is.
Yet, doctors, before they start working, promise to treat everyone equally. Even someone who just tried to murder a whole busload of people and got wounded is treated with the same care and devotion as his victims. Inside Israel’s healthcare, there is no anti-Semitism, no racism, no anti-anybodys. There, no one needs a ‘peace process.’ There is peace already.
My father was a young physician in the largest Nazi concentration camp in the Netherlands, Westerbork, when the camp commander appointed him as his personal doctor and also the physician of all the other Nazis and the camp guards. Many decades later, I asked my Jewish father, who never talked about the war: “Wasn’t that hard, to take good care of people busy with trying to murder all the Jews in the Netherlands?” He simply answered: “I swore an oath to heal. The rest was politics and irrelevant.”
In Israel, doctors, nurses, assistant nurses, physiotherapists, and paramedical personnel of every persuasion work together and mixed. Patients also are roomed together as if outside, no war is going on.
And also politicians and the army have assisted in moving many sick from the West Bank, Gaza, and Syria to the best healthcare in the Middle East.
Only the hospitals’ cleaners in Israel are all Arab. The walls and floors are still inside capitalist society. But all the healing happens in a special place, in the Garden of Eden–a promise of what will come of the whole world. An extension of true democracy. Everyone counts and no one counts double.
