The American Left and Political Islam
In his book “Unholy Alliance,” David Horowitz spoke about the alliance between extremist Islamic movements and the American left, taking into account a speech by Osama bin Laden talking about the inevitable fate of Islam and communism in the face of the Crusaders.
He went on to elaborate on his definition of high treason defining it as a Citizen of a country standing with another country and its policies against his country under slogans he considered weak. However unlikely it may seem, leftists and Islamists have become closer in recent years, relying on ideological exchange and working at the governmental and non-governmental levels, as the two movements work to build a common front against the United States and its allies. The red and green alliance represents the emerging complex challenge will require careful attention by US policymakers, Europe, and Arab countries as well.
If we separate political Islam from the extremist Islamic groups, we will find a them pointing to the same direction, with little to no substantial differences whatsoever. Islamic Political Ideologies relies and stems from a Marxist vision of a desperate struggle for power between the exploiting class and the exploited, or in this case the underdog Muslims and those who are in Power.
They are making revolutions to set things right (according to their claims.) It is a viewpoint that is summarized in the pursuit of power with syndromes such as oppressors and oppressed, colonizers and colonized, and finally good and evil. They function as two sides exchanging roles, and not different parties as they parade or as many would presume. So they establish a radicalized movement, along with what seems to be a moderate one; to control the masses both ways. It is a holistic way of thinking, in which all human relationships are viewed through the dynamics of power and cannot be examined through any other lens.
In other words, the narrow way in which both groups see the world is the same. Their issues are merely vessels to carry their revolutionary ideology, which history has repeatedly proven to be nothing more than utopian ideas that shatter before the rocks of reality. It is worth noting that the so -called countries of the axis of resistance also rely on socialist economic theories rather than Islamic ones, and this is clearly evident in their implementation, in addition to the fact that most of the allies of these countries are considered socialists at minimum.
An important example of this alliance is the rapprochement between the Democratic Party and the Islamic leadership in Iran. What is happening today in America is how “BLM ” Black Lives Matter has turned into the “ANTIFA” movement. Anti-Fascism: Mob movements that appear to support Muslim causes – as they differ from the “peaceful” movement supporting Gaza – but in reality are anti-authoritarian movements that reject government hierarchies and instead call for nebulous governments in which the law has no clear authority.
What does this alliance mean to us, the Arabs of the Gulf, and what are its outcomes? The United States’ support for political Islam movements – even if sometimes indirectly – will ultimately lead to its support for Islamic liberation movements such as the Taliban, the Houthis, the Muslim Brotherhood, and the ruling regime in Iran, which will destabilize the region in an unprecedented way, as happened during the events of the Arab Spring, as these movements believe in absolute rule for them, and for them alone.
On the other hand, Republican interests have historically intersected with Arab interests in the Gulf, as statistics indicate that bilateral trade flourished during Republican rule in the White House compared to when a Democratic ruler took office. As for the geopolitical aspect, we have all witnessed the changes that occurred when President Trump took office, apart from American events and his media statements. The balance of power has changed in many ways in favor of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, compared to what they had suffered before that.
As for the outcome of the elections, and who wins or loses, is left to the American voters, but for us as the Arab Gulf states, and Bahrain in particular, Bahraini diplomacy is not without achievements during the past few years that have ensured that whether the next president is a Democrat or a Republican, the dealings will be the same, clear, and firm, ensuring the desired results. Thanks to the Abraham Accords, and the new Alliance with Israel.
