The Big Lie: How 58 Years of Enshrined Lies Made ‘Genocide’ Believable
Decades of propaganda and repetition turned falsehood into moral reflex — and truth into heresy.
The Spark
For fifty years, unverified language from NGOs and media softened the moral ground. Words like apartheid, genocide, and ethnic cleansing—once reserved for history’s darkest chapters—became political shorthand. Accusation became assumption.
By October 7 and its aftermath, the world didn’t analyze Israel’s war; it recognized it—pre-loaded with the word “genocide.”
The Mirror
Critics point to Gaza’s civilian toll as proof of “disproportionate force.” Yet that conclusion ignores the record: a modern army fighting an enemy that hides behind civilians, stores weapons in schools and mosques, and turns hospitals into command centers.
For decades, politically motivated actors learned that moral labels carry more voltage than facts. Repetition created authority. A lie told often enough became a headline, then a hashtag, then a worldview.
What we are witnessing is not disproportionality—it is distortion.
The Fracture Beneath
When truth became performance, journalism turned participant.
In July 2025, the BBC admitted that its film had concealed that its 13-year-old narrator was the son of a Hamas official. The network pulled the documentary and apologized.
As columnist Melanie Phillips observed,
“When images lie—from Hollywood to the BBC—a genocidal narrative of falsehoods is promoted as factually true.”
Outlets once trusted to filter propaganda now amplify it.
Moral Outrage — The Stand
The grotesque inversion is not the lie itself but the silence of those who know better.
For decades, diplomats, editors, and professors have watched the vocabulary of the twentieth century—genocide, apartheid, ethnic cleansing—weaponized against the world’s only Jewish state. They called it “balance.” It was cowardice.
That moral inversion reached its peak in 1975, when the UN passed Resolution 3379 labeling Zionism as racism. As Ambassador Daniel Patrick Moynihan thundered when the UN declared Zionism is racism:
“The United States rises to declare before the General Assembly… it will never acquiesce in this infamous act. A great evil has been loosed upon the world.”
That evil was the corruption of moral language itself. Every institution repeating those words, stripped of history and context, participates in that corruption.
This is not about policy. It is about decency.
When institutions trade truth for comfort, evil doesn’t need to win—it only needs to be indulged.
The Moral Core — Law, Lies, and Contagion
This conditioning didn’t begin in 2023—it began in 1967, when a battlefield victory was reframed as a moral crime. The Six-Day War should have ended the debate: Israel had reclaimed land internationally recognized under the San Remo Resolution (1920), the Mandate for Palestine (1922), and the Anglo-American Convention (1924) as the Jewish homeland.
Yet the propaganda machine turned law into accusation.
As Professor Eugene Kontorovich, Director of International Law at the Kohelet Policy Forum, has shown,
“The claim that Israel is an occupying power in Judea and Samaria has no foundation in international law or history.”
The League of Nations Mandate, later inherited by the UN, recognized the Jewish people’s right to settle anywhere west of the Jordan River.
”You cannot occupy land that international law already assigned to you,” he notes.
Why These Are the “Big Lies”?
The modern war on truth rests on three colossal inversions.
The first lie—“Occupation”—reversed international law itself, turning a legally recognized homeland into a supposed act of theft.
The second—“Zionism is Racism”—perverted the language of human rights, branding Jewish self-determination as bigotry.
And, it went on with libels of apartheid, ethnic cleansing, starvation and indiscriminate slaughter of civilians
And, that led to the last REAL BIG LIE: “Genocide”—completed the inversion, accusing the victims of history’s worst crime of committing it themselves.
Together they form the modern structure of “The Big Lie”—so vast that the world believed it precisely because it seemed unthinkable.
And one lie always leads to the next. The falsehood of “occupation” laid the groundwork for the greater lie of “genocide.”
Even Joseph Goebbels knew, and said, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”
And he proved it—so effectively that he persuaded an entire nation to do the unimaginable.
What the world once swore never to repeat, it now repeats almost unconsciously. A method born in evil has become the template for modern propaganda.
As George Orwell warned, “The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it.”
Why does the big lie work so well?
Psychologists call it the Illusory Truth Effect—repetition increases perceived truth.
Studies by Fazio, Hassan, and Barber show repetition itself makes statements feel true.
Social media magnifies this dynamic; as Brady and Crockett (Science Advances, 2021) note, it amplifies moral outrage.
As Cambridge psychologist Sander van der Linden adds:
“Lies and fake news tend to be simple and sticky; science is nuanced and complex.”
Repetition + Emotion + Institutional Megaphones = Perceived Truth.
No case exposes that alchemy more starkly than Israel’s conduct in war.
Col. John Spencer, Chair of Urban Warfare Studies at West Point, wrote:
“In my career I’ve never known an army to take such measures to protect civilians while fighting the enemy in the same buildings.”
In Newsweek (March 25, 2024) he added:
“Israel has implemented more precautions to prevent civilian harm than any military in history—beyond what international law requires and beyond what the U.S. did in Iraq or Afghanistan.”
Yet the world, primed by half a century of repetition, still called it genocide.
The Covenant Call — Reclaiming Truth
Once “genocide” became a meme, rhetoric metastasized into violence.
Britain’s Community Security Trust logged 4,103 antisemitic incidents in 2023, with 2,699 after October 7.
In the US, the ADL’s 2024 audit counted 9,354 — a 344 percent jump since 2022.
From Manchester to Washington, DC, Jews were attacked not over battlefield facts but over a story rehearsed for fifty years.
This is not a media glitch. It is the collapse of journalism’s immune system—speed over scrutiny and emotion over evidence.
If truth still matters, repair begins when editors verify before they amplify, when universities reward evidence over ideology, and when audiences learn to spot the trick.
The world does not need fewer opinions about Israel. It needs more discipline with facts.
Because when truth becomes propaganda, freedom becomes theater—and justice becomes whatever the mob demands.
