The English Israeli press fails the demonstrators

If you don’t show up, how can you file a report?

Wednesday, I participated in the evening demonstration in Jerusalem against the judicial coup attempts by the government.

We walked, stood, and made noise, marching from Hertzog Road, past the High Court of Justice, to the empty government offices, with, in the background, the lit building of the Knesset.

Demonstrators of every age and political persuasion except the far-right.

The mood was from somber to happy, but always determined and relaxed.

I looked at the press reports in English while marching. Nothing.

All reporting was only about disruptions or confrontations with the police. Our peaceful and respectful march of 10,000s did not register. I found just one picture of it by a Muslim photographer for AP. The playful long red balloon was not explained by the caption. It is the red line we draw.

The press also dubs the law against the Hugh Court keeping a reasonability standard the ‘reasonability law,’ instead of the ‘anti-reasonability law.’

The code seems to be: We’re very diverse, but we don’t bicker. Instead, I snicker. When I see people carrying ‘Against the Occupation’ signs who scant: Do-mo-cra-cy. Of course, the only ones on the West Bank who have democracy are the Jews living in the liberated (from Jordan) areas, while, sadly, the Muslims living in the PA-occupied areas are ruled by dictators.

When people say something against Bibi, I mention that he does have merits. When they declare their love for the High Court, I point out they brought this mess upon us by not blocking haters of Muslims and Gays.

I was interviewed by a Latin-American news crew. Israel’s TV doesn’t want people with non-polarizing views. If you’re not furious or terrified, your opinion is no news. They must show the rift in the people that isn’t. The real rift is between the far-right wing of the government and the People.

Even the left-wing Israeli press is hijacked by sensationalism. They don’t seem to notice that this way, they support the furious false narrative from the far-right bullies that we are anarchists and they are law-abiding.

The police and military police were the sweetest. Most of them, girls and boys in their early twenties. They are barred from and thoroughly trained in not giving any opinion. But I am allowed to talk to them. With a big smile, I thanked dozens of them for their safekeeping (todah ‘al hash’mirah). A police force they’d wish they had in Latin America.
