The Essence of Yom Kippur

The essence of Rosh Hashanah is judgment, and the essence of Yom Kippur is mercy.

From Judgment to Mercy

Rosh Hashanah is the day of visitation פְּקֻדָּה and remembrance זְכִירָה, the same day is called “the day of the conception of the world” הַיּוֹם הָרָת עוֹלָם. “The day of conception of the world” in “atbash” is 431, which is exactly the gematria of “visitation and remembrance”, as follows:

Visitation פְּקֻדָּה 189
Remembrance זְכִירָה 242

The point of conception is when life is created something from nothing, ex nihilo, which is Rosh Hashanah, and the next critical moment is the acceptance and continuation of life in the womb, which is Yom Kippur.

Conception denotes selecting one and limiting many, which is harsh judgment.

On Yom Kippur blood was brought into the Holy of Holies to atone for life, which is symbolized by the womb of the mother that nurtures life. This is mercy, which in Hebrew is Rachamim רַחֲמִים, the same root for womb רֶחֶם.

The gematria of mercy רַחֲמִים is 298, which is exactly the same of “womb and blood” רֶחֶם וְדָם.

And bring his blood into the Holy of Holies וְהֵבִיא אֶת-דָּמוֹ אֶל-קֹּדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים 1369

1369 is 37 squared, where 37 is the gematria of Yechidah יְחִידָה, the highest level of soul that one can attain by the forgiveness of sin on Yom Kippur.

Yechidah is the essential connection between God and man, which is the secret of Mashiach.

“Yechidah and Mashiach”יְחִידָה וְמָּשִׁיחַ  in gematria is 401, which is the same of “Yechidah on Yom Kippur” יְחִידָה בְּיוֹם כִּפּוּר, also the same of “in the blood of atonement”בַּדָּם הַכִּפֻּרִים.

Midat HaDin

Rosh Hashanah is the “attribute of judgment” מִדָּת הַדִּין, the gematria is 513, corresponding to the offering of his son by Abraham, which is read on Rosh Hashanah:

וַיֹּאמֶר, אַבְרָהָם, אֱלֹהִים יִרְאֶה-לּוֹ הַשֶּׂה לְעֹלָה, בְּנִי And Abraham said: ‘God will provide Himself the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son.’ (Gen 22:8)

The Hebrew הַשֶּׂה לְעוֹלָה בְּנִי can be read as “My son is the lamb for a burnt-offering”, which in gematria is 513, when the defective “vav” is restored to burnt-offering. This is exactly the same gematria of Midat HaDin (the attribute of judgment) for Rosh Hashanah.

The shofer blast consists of three types:

Tekiah – long blast תְּקִיעָה 585
Shevarim – broken blast שְׁבָרִים 552
Teruah –   staccato תְּרוּעָה 681

The secret of the shofer sounding is the three steps to awaken the dead. The first long blast is for those that are in light sleep, followed by the intermediary, until the final staccato which is for those in deep sleep.

1818 is the same gematria of “the time of the resurrection of the dead” הָעֵת לִתְחִיַּת הַמֵּתִים, which is the same gematria of:

Resurrection of Yitzchak (Isaac) from his death תְּחִיַּת שֱׁיִצְחָק מְמוֹתוֹ

Isaac is the prototype of the death and resurrection of Mashiach whose death serves as the atonement.

1818 is also the gematria of Mashiach revealed progressively and regressively, as follows:

Mashiach מָּשִׁיחַ  
  מ מש משי משיח משי מש מ 1818

The Book of Jonah

The book of Jonah is read on Yom Kippur, the essence of Jonah is about mercy.

Jonah the son of Amittai יוֹנָה בֶן-אֲמִתַּי means Jonah is the son of “my truth”, hence Jonah represents strict judgment by the standard of absolute truth.

Forgiving Nineveh represents mercy, which contradicts the standard of absolute truth, for this reason Jonah ran away from the mission.

Jonah’s praise to God in Jonah 4:2 is a direct quote from the 13 Midot of mercy, except the word “truth” was purposefully left out by Jonah:

The original text:

אֵל רַחוּם וְחַנּוּן–אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם, וְרַב-חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering,

and abundant in goodness and truth (Ex 34:6)

The modified version by Jonah:

אֵל-חַנּוּן וְרַחוּם, אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם וְרַב-חֶסֶד,וְנִחָם עַל-הָרָעָה gracious God, and compassionate, longsuffering, and abundant in mercy, and repentest Thee of the evil. (Jonah 4:2)

This represents Jonah’s lower knowledge of God in that His forgiveness of evil is due to His compromising the “truth”.

The gourd that provides shade to Jonah represents mercy, and the worm that destroyed the gourd represents the truth. Jonah was unworthy of the gourd for which he did not plant nor labor, and by the strict judgment in absolute truth, the gourd must be taken away from Jonah.

The moral of the story is that in its final analysis, God metes out mercy without justification, for His very nature is mercy.

Jonah means dove, the universal symbol of peace with olive leave. The gematria of Jonah יּוֹנָה is 71, meaning the light of Torah preached from Israel to the 70 nations, therefore Jonah was sent to the nation of Nineveh.

Yeshua was compared to Jonah in Matt 12:40 which is the prototype of the mission to the nations.

Olive leave עֲלֵה-זַיִת in gematria is 522, which is the same of Yeshua spelled out in full, as follows:

Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ  
Spelled out יוד שין וו עין 522

522 is also the gematria of “world peace” שׁלוֹם עוֹלָם, which is the symbol of dove with olive leave.


Forgiveness of sin depends on repentance, which in Hebrew is Teshuvah תְּשׁוּבָה, the gematria is 713.

The essence of repentance is Torah and faith, the gematria is also 713:

Torah תּוֹרָה 611
Faith אֱמוּנָה 102

Torah is truth, representing judgment, and by faith comes forgiveness, representing mercy.

On the other hand, Torah is symbolized by lights, and faith is symbolized by the vessels that receive and contain the lights, the gematria is also 713.

Lights אוֹרוֹת 613
Vessels כֵּלִים 100

In this case, Torah as lights denotes mercy and vessel that receives and contains requires judgment.

YHVH is symbolized by light which is mercy, and Elohim is the vessel that contains the light which is judgment.

Elohim in gematria is 86, which is the gematria of “vessel of YHVH” כְּלִי יְהוָה.

YHVH in gematria is 26, which in Hebrew is כו, which is spelled out as: כף וו, the pregnant letters are פו, which is 86, the gematria of Elohim.

It is now clear that within judgment there is mercy, and within mercy there is judgment.

Rosh Hashanah is the Day of Judgment, the gematria of Rosh Hashanah רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה is 861, which is exactly the sum of the two names of God denoting judgment and mercy, as follows:

Elohim of Truth אֱלֹהִים הָאֱמֶת 532
YHVH of Mercy יְהוָה הָרַחֲמִים 329

Yom Kippur is the Day of Mercy, and the secret is Mashiach of Atonement מָּשִׁיחַ הַכִּפֻּרִים which in gematria is 713, the same as repentance.

The “atbash” is exactly the spelling out of Elohim, symbolizing the sweetening of judgment on Yom Kippur, as follows:

291 is the spelling out of Elohim (with Hey spelled out with an Alef):

Elohim אֱלֹהִים

The gematria of “atonement” הַכִּפֻּרִים is 355, which is exactly the gematria of “atoning blood” דָּם הַכִּפּוּר.

The “atoning blood of Mashiach” דָּם הַכִּפּוּר הַמָּשִׁיחַ in gematria is 718, which is exactly the gematria of “The repentance” הַתְשׁוּבָה.
