The Jew among Nations: What Israel’s Isolation Reveals about the West’s Collapse

For nearly 80 years, the Western world told itself a comforting story: that the arc of history had bent toward justice. That liberal democracy had triumphed. That the “good guys” had won and had learned.

But today, the foundation of that story is buckling. The pillars of postwar liberalism – moral clarity, universal rights, democratic norms – are rotting from within. And nothing reveals that decay more clearly than the world’s treatment of Israel.

Israel is more than a nation.

It is, and always has been, the Jew among nations: exceptionalized, isolated, and held to impossible standards. And just as Jews throughout history have served as the moral barometer of the societies they inhabited, so too does Israel now reveal the West’s moral erosion.

When the nations that once swore “Never Again” choose silence, or worse, complicity in the face of genocidal terror, something deeper is breaking.

The Illusion of Moral High Ground

Liberal democracies built their identity on a post-Holocaust promise: to defend human rights, to stand against tyranny, to protect the vulnerable. But that moral framework has collapsed under the weight of comfort, political convenience, and ideological tribalism.

When Israel is blamed for defending itself against barbaric atrocities — when rockets, rape, and mass murder are rationalized away as “resistance” — it is not just a betrayal of Israel.

It is the West failing the very moral test it built its legitimacy upon.

The UN: From Hope to Hypocrisy

Nowhere is this rot more evident than in the United Nations, the institution created to uphold the postwar order. Today, it stands as a parody of its founding principles:- A Human Rights Council dominated by the worst abusers:

• UNRWA embedding with terrorists and hiding hostages
• UNESCO rewriting history to sever Jewish connection to Jerusalem and other Jewish sites
• An ICC and ICJ weaponized to isolate Israel while dictators walk free

This isn’t failure. It’s ideological corruption. The UN hasn’t just abandoned its mission. It has made targeting the Jewish state a central feature of its global theater. Just look at the permanent agenda item reserved for Israel. No other country-not Iran, not China, not Russia-is subjected to a standing line of condemnation.

Only the Jewish state.

Liberalism Without Courage

Democracy is the hardest form of government to sustain. It requires vigilance, memory, and sacrifice. But the West has grown soft. It has confused comfort with justice. And so, when the time came to stand up morally — when Hamas filmed the slaughter of Jews and the global response was either a shrug or mass protests in support of Hamas — the West revealed what it had become.

The treatment of Israel is not the disease.
It is the symptom. The clearest sign that liberalism, stripped of moral courage and distorted beyond recognition, becomes just another stage for moral cowardice.

Israel as Mirror, Not Exception

What happens to the Jew always tells you something about the world around them. That is as true now as it was in Berlin, Baghdad, or Babylon.

Israel’s isolation reveals not that it is broken, but that the systems judging it are. When the only Jewish state becomes the world’s most condemned, scrutinized, and delegitimized country, we are not seeing a crisis of Israel. We are seeing a crisis of the West.

And once again, the Jews — and therefore their state —are being told to go quietly. “Enough of this war,” they say.

So what if there are still 50 hostages underground, 20 of them, we pray, still alive.

As a classical liberal, I believed in a world rooted in reason, law, and shared moral foundations.  But what flies under the banner of “liberalism” today has been hijacked by moral contortionists.

Ideologues who rewrite history, flatten complexity, and weaponize compassion against the very values liberalism once swore to uphold.

So to the world’s leaders, institutions, influencers, and self-declared arbiters of justice and morality now demanding “a ceasefire”:

We are disinclined to acquiesce to your request.
