The Power of Momentum in the War of Deterrence
We are living during historical times as the world is changing rapidly. Empires are rising and sinking, and power is shifting from side to side. Israel’s latest attacks on Iran are a fascinating example of the critical importance of momentum.
Although the war between Israel and Iran has been going on for decades, the past 48 hours are a game-changer. Aside from the brilliant intelligence and advanced technology, what I would like to highlight is the momentum. The Israeli attacks completely changed the momentum and the entire world are watching Iran crippled while Israel is victorious.
Israel’s ability to wipe out Iran’s top military generals as well as their defensive systems within 48 hours created a chain reaction and a general sense of awe. This effect isn’t only important because it causes deterrence among Israel’s enemies. I suggest that the impact of momentum among Israel’s allies is even more important!
I would like to point out President Trump’s reactions to Israel’s attacks as an example of the importance of momentum for Israel’s allies. At first, before the results of the attacks were clear, President Trump’s reactions were somewhat distant, and it seemed like the emphasis was on the fact that the USA was not involved. As time went by and the momentum shifted clearly, Trump’s reactions became more and more positive towards Israel. When it was clear that Israel carried out a historic military campaign, Trump’s tone was completely different, and it was almost as if he were taking credit for the incredible success and using Israel’s momentum as a threat to pressure Iran to sign a deal.
The power of momentum in the war of deterrence is obviously clear when looking at Israel’s enemies. Hezbollah is a good example of this. Who would have believed that Iran’s strongest proxy would declare publicly that it will not join the attacks on Israel?
This is the moment Netanyahu has been waiting for his entire political career. But unfortunately, momentum can shift quickly, so the time window is narrow. The near future will tell if Israel will take full advantage of this momentum and knock out Iran’s nuclear capabilities, and hopefully even completely end the Iranian regime that has caused so much pain and suffering for the Iranian people.
