The Power Of The Powerfully Wealthy

The revelations of Howard Weinstein’s sexual misadventures within the orbit of Hollywood is shocking, sad, and just downright disgraceful. As had been the lack of responses from the liberal – based Hollywood community who would have preferred to have maintained a tight – lipped lock on his behavior. Now, years after the facts, an avalanche of confessors are coming to light over the sexual abuse they had to endure from Weinstein and others in positions of dominance and power. It seems that in America and in the UK the statute of limitations continues ticking in the crimes of sexual assault and its manifold ramifications.

Accused of multiple acts of sexual misconduct, assault, rape and indecent public exposure over a period of at least 20 years, all of this miscreant behavior came to light following a New York Times piece which claimed Weinstein had settled with eight known victims against whom he had salaciously repelled with his actions.

Should any of us act surprised ? First there was the Bill Cosby tragedy where the now notorious and powerful American personality has been accused of indecent sexual behavior and rape by over sixty women over a forty year period of time. Arnold Schwarzenegger also stands accused by multiple women of having fondled them or assaulted them. A whole line of powerful personalities from Fox News, starting with Roger Aisles, stand accused of deliberate and pronounced sexual misbehavior leading to their firing and removal from that company. Woody Allen became the subject of indecent sexual behavior many years ago, as well as Romain Polanski. And who can forget what then Candidate Trump said about his treatment of women when he thought the microphone was off as to how, because of his power, he could assault women at will ?

Why the silence for such an eternally long period of time ? Was everyone so blind, ignorant, and unconscious while all this was going on, or were they afraid ? How do you accuse a powerful and publicly revered icon who has assaulted you without ending up as the victim of his power and powerful allies ?

There are allies. These are the individuals who promote such excruciatingly painful trauma to others by their inactivity whilst, at the same time, having a strong sense of knowing what is really going on, and doing nothing to stop it. Such as been the case with newspaper articles about Weinstein, for example, which were nixed because he had a chummy relationship with the then editors…and also because of who he was, and the power he could bring to bear against anyone who would dare publicize such criminality. Just ask journalist Sharon Waxman whose article about him and his actions in the magazine The Wrap was spiked following Weinstein’s intervention.

Others are afraid of their prospects of fame and continued fortune exploding up in their faces if they comment publicly. Their silence allows such demons to fester and multiply. They have all been complicit by their failure to speak out. You would think that such a liberal – based community as Hollywood who are rarely close – lipped on so many other issues should suddenly have lost their voices when their own became targeted victims.

Clearly the powerful and the powerfully wealthy believe they are stratospherically above any law or ethical behavior and, because of that, they have free rein to do exactly what they like to intimidate and frighten vulnerable women. The male ego of domination has created monsters to multiply in the entertainment industry because very few have cared or wanted to end their careers prematurely.

So now, beginning with a pitifully few entertainers, such as Meryl Streep, and George Clooney, to a current tsunami of claims and accusations are now being made against males everywhere who have made inappropriate advances, derogatory remarks and even attempted assaults against women, both in and out of Hollywood. What we have seen clearly is that the culture of Hollywood is no different from any other. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

It’s time for Hollywood to speak out loudly about the predators who stalk their industry and target women for their perverted behavior. From Holly – wouldn’t needs to emerge a Holly – would that can take down those self – proclaimed powerful individuals who would prey on women for their prurient interests and behavior. And you know the best way they can do this ? By the only means they know well….Make A Blockbuster (or Netflix) film about it !!
