The Power of Words to Wound or to Heal

The Power of Words to Wound or to Heal

Double Portion Parsha -Tazria and Metzora

After childbirth, a woman needs renewal,

Revival of strength and recovery

To regain her equilibrium

With understanding and sensitivity.

Just as God rested after creation,

So is a woman entitled to rest.

The power of words to wound or to heal

Is witnessed in that which is uttered.

As no one is separate from anyone,

Each person is part of one’s collectivity.

To speak ill of someone affects three people:

The person who speaks, the person who listens

And the person of whom the evil is spoken.

Slander is a plague that affects body and soul.

One’s character is molded by the words,

Silences, listening and the stillness

With which one accompanies or confronts

Another who is not distinct from us.

Separation is essential

To reintegrate the perpetrator of evil words

To life anew, in recognition of harm

Caused to the wounded victim and listeners.
