The Rule of Law Ensures Security for All

Torah Portion Shemini

In memory of  my maternal grandfather, Dr. Jakub Joshua Herzig – a human rights lawyer, who survived the Holocaust. He worked tirelessly for justice and the rule of law. He said, “Passover needs Shavuot because freedom without law is anarchy”.

Unbridled passion leads to anarchy

Without the rule of law applied to all.

Even in exaltation with ecstasy,

Nadav and Avihu needed restraint.

Restraint is not a curb to freedom

But ever vigilant security

For the liberty of society,

Wherein laws, statutes and rules are respected.

A sober second thought does light a flame

As an offering, inclusive of all.

Recognizing responsibility

Does not negate but enhances liberty.

Without unity of purpose for all,

Selfish motives prevail as a risk to all.
