The Sages of the Talmud try to help us to think like us, not like them

Our own thinking is the Giving of the Torah all over again on our level

Insecure people want authorities to tell them what to feel, think, and do. But supreme teachers want their students to trust their own thinking!

Often people try to read the Torah trying to find answers. But when you seriously and extensively study Moses’s writings, you get more questions than answers. That is on purpose because questions put our brains in gear.

Its continuation, the Talmud is full of questions, more than answers.

Some people think the Talmud tries to teach us to think like the Sages. Trying that would be so presumptuous. We can never think on their level. And it’s totally unwise trying to learn their texts by rote and parrot them.

The Talmud aims to put our brains in gear. Their next [unwritten] question of us is then, ‘What do you think?’ More than the Sages wanted to share their thinking, they want to hear ours. Only that can keep the Torah alive!

This is the Oral Law. Its writing is confined by the Tractates we got handed down, but it still, via each lecture, expects us to ask and think.

No, our response will not be at the level of the Sages. But it will be on our level. And that’s the highest level we’ll ever get at. Better even, the Giving of the Torah is not finished. It continues every day. There’s no school of our learning without daily new insights. That’s G^d talking to us!

Of course, we must check if our thoughts are evil, nonsensical, mistaken, or holy. For that we have brains and knowledge. But the holy part is holy!

As we say at the beginning of our Main Prayer, ‘Our G^d and the G^d of our Ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’ First, we need to figure out who G^d is for us. But then, we check if this aligns with the Traditional Jewish way.

When the Sages leave something out or open, they most likely thought of that too. (Though not for sure because per the Midrash, Moses could not follow Rabbi Akiba! A first-year student can ask a professor philosophy on the subject he’s the world’s authority on that he studied for 40 years a question he never thought of!) They want us to become more receptive and see what we think, as a continuation to their transcript. We will not be able to answer as deeply Jewish as our greatest Rabbis and Codifiers. But our thoughts come from G^d too, and we couldn’t do any better than that!

We won’t be Prophets in the sense that everyone should listen to us. Rather, we should also listen to others. But in the first place, we should listen to us. If we don’t listen to ourselves, who should? If we only listen to ourselves, how much would we contribute? And if not now, when exactly?

This short list doesn't mean to disrespect others who taught him a lot or a little. One of his rabbis calls him Mr. Innovation [Ish haChidushim]. Yet, his originalities seem to root deeply in traditional Judaism, though they may grow in unexpected directions. In fact, he claims he's modernizing nothing. Rather, mainly basing himself on the basic Hebrew Torah text, he tries to rediscover classical Jewish thought almost lost in thousands of years of stifling Gentile domination and Jewish assimilation. (He pleads for a close reading of the Torah instead of going by rough assumptions of what it would probably mean and before fleeing to Commentaries.) This, in all aspects of life, but prominently in the areas of Free Will, Activism, Homosexuality for men, and Redemption. * He hopes that his words will inspire and inform, and disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. He aims to bring a fresh perspective rather than harp on the obvious and familiar. When he can, he loves to write encyclopedic overviews. He doesn't expect his readers to agree. Rather, original minds should be disputed.
