Zahava Bauer

The Sand… and The Stars

Realizing it was time
He lowered His face
To Abraham’s ear
And whispered
A promise
To the worried father

There will be
More children
Than you can count.
As many, I swear,
As the sand
By the sea

But Abraham turned
In return
To whisper back
What’s the cost?
Tell me please
The catch
I must know.

He lowered His voice
In care
And whispered
Thoughtfully
With just
the slightest
The faintest
Hesitation

To fill a land with souls,
He whispers,
There must be a sky
Filled with souls
Millions of stars
Who sacrificed
To watch over

Before he could react
God returned-
But I swear!
With each rise
and with each fall
Of the moon
I will count each one
By name
Its shine
Its name
Just his own

Will the night…
Feel long then?
Asked Abraham
Tears flowing
Down his cheeks.
Can the sand
Even bear
To survive it?

Each time
I call a name
God responds
In kind
It will ripple
The sea down below.
The night will feel long
But the sun will then rise
And the sand will glisten
Once more
