Anyone who gave Netanyahu the benefit of the doubt was a right-winger
Hardly any Judaism plays a part in Israel’s secular courts. It’s British Law. And it’s crazy. The accusers (prosecutors) can talk endlessly without any sound from the defendants or their lawyers. When it’s their turn, which spectator or judge didn’t find them guilty already? But there is more.
The first thing that gave away for me that the charges against the PM were trumped up was that Bibi is much too smart to do such stupid things.
The second was that the charges were constructs, assumptions, not facts.
The third one was that crucial witnesses were coerced by the police and prosecution: If you don’t testify against the PM, you’re toast.
Now the judges suggested the prosecution a plea bargain. I expect Bibi to refuse. Who needs a bargain when facts set one free (pardon the pun)? Luckily, the prosecution, drunk with its lack of success, already declined.
Yes, Netanyahu is a capitalist. But he also was Jew and smart enough to prioritize saving lives over the economy (compare Trump) during the pandemic saving thousands of lives (and the economy).
Yes, Netanyahu is a shrewd talker and lies constantly. However, that’s part of political craftsmanship. But he learned not to lie to loyal, true friends. Dealing with terrorists parading as politicians, you don’t want a naïve PM.
Yes, it’s annoying always to be dominated by the ultra-Orthodox whom Bibi always takes in tow. But that doesn’t make him a crook.
Which doesn’t mean his work boyfriend Derri should return to politics.
Which doesn’t mean his social media star son should resume tweeting.
And the anti-judicial power grab by his coalition must still be stopped.
We should have new elections, send Bibi to his pension, and get a center-left coalition with women, Muslims, and half the Likud for many years.
