Trump’s Gaza Plan: A Threat to Stability, Peace, and Justice

President Donald Trump’s suggestion to “clean out” Gaza by relocating 1.5 million Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan is as audacious as it is troubling. Framed as a solution to the intractable Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the proposal risks destabilizing the Middle East, violates international norms, and contradicts decades of American-led peace efforts. Rather than fostering security for Israel or resolving the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, such a move would likely entrench suffering and sow seeds for future conflict.

A Plan That Undermines Peace and Human Rights

At its core, Trump’s proposal suggests forcibly displacing Palestinians from Gaza, whether temporarily or permanently. Such an action would violate international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits the transfer of populations under occupation. It would also trample on the Palestinians’ internationally recognized right of return to their ancestral lands, enshrined in UN Resolution 194.

Displacement on this scale raises moral questions that Israel cannot ignore. While Israel has a right—and duty—to defend its citizens from rocket fire and terrorism, the wholesale removal of a population would inevitably draw comparisons to ethnic cleansing. This not only undermines Israel’s moral standing but also exposes it to international criticism and legal challenges.

Regional Fallout: Egypt and Jordan Caught in the Crossfire

The plan places an undue burden on two of Israel’s key regional partners: Egypt and Jordan.

  • Jordan, already home to over 2 million Palestinian refugees, is under immense strain. Hosting additional refugees would exacerbate economic pressures, deepen political instability, and potentially destabilize the monarchy. History offers a stark reminder: the influx of refugees after the 1967 war contributed to Black September (1970-1971), a bloody conflict between Jordan’s government and the Palestine Liberation Organization.
  • Egypt, with its fragile economy and longstanding concerns about the Sinai Peninsula, has consistently rejected such proposals. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has made clear that resettling Palestinians in Sinai would not only jeopardize Egyptian sovereignty but also undermine Palestinian claims to their homeland.

For both countries, the environmental toll would also be immense. Limited access to water, arable land, and infrastructure would make accommodating millions of displaced people a near-impossible task.

Israel’s Security Concerns: A Double-Edged Sword

Support for Trump’s plan from some ultranationalist Israeli politicians reflects an understandable desire for greater security. A Gaza emptied of its population would, in theory, eliminate threats from Hamas. However, this approach ignores the long-term consequences.

An empty Gaza does not guarantee security. Displacement would likely radicalize Palestinians further, fueling extremism not only among those displaced but also among those who remain in the West Bank or refugee camps. The plan risks turning Egypt and Jordan—two of Israel’s most crucial partners—into adversaries, undermining the regional stability that has been painstakingly built through treaties like Camp David and Wadi Araba.

Moreover, international backlash could deepen Israel’s diplomatic isolation, weakening its relationships with European allies, progressive elements within the U.S., and even Arab states that recently normalized ties under the Abraham Accords.

Humanitarian Consequences for Palestinians

For Palestinians, the proposal is nothing short of catastrophic. Gaza, despite its many challenges, is home. It represents their history, culture, and identity. Forcibly removing them from this land would inflict profound psychological and cultural trauma, severing them from their roots.

Displaced Palestinians often face decades of statelessness and marginalization. In Lebanon, for instance, Palestinian refugees are barred from working in at least 50 professions, living in conditions of systemic poverty. A similar fate could await those sent to Egypt or Jordan, leaving them dependent on international aid and vulnerable to exploitation.

The displacement of children, in particular, raises concerns about a lost generation. Lacking access to stable education, healthcare, and security, these children could grow up without hope, creating fertile ground for future radicalization.

Lessons from History

The world has seen the devastating consequences of forced population movements. The 1947 Partition of India, which displaced millions, resulted in mass violence and entrenched animosities. More recently, the plight of the Rohingya in Myanmar has shown how displacement leads to statelessness, human trafficking, and generational suffering. Trump’s plan risks creating a similar situation for Palestinians, perpetuating cycles of poverty, resentment, and instability.

A Blow to U.S. Credibility

Trump’s proposal also carries significant implications for America’s role as a global leader. For decades, the U.S. has supported a two-state solution as the cornerstone of its Middle East policy. By endorsing forced displacement, the U.S. risks alienating allies and undermining its credibility in other international conflicts.

The plan also weakens America’s ability to mediate future peace talks. If Palestinians and their allies see the U.S. as complicit in plans that violate their basic rights, trust in American-led initiatives will erode, pushing the region further away from resolution.

A Better Path Forward

Rather than resorting to coercion, the international community must pursue sustainable solutions rooted in diplomacy, economic development, and respect for human rights.

  1. Revitalizing Gaza’s Economy:
    • Invest in infrastructure projects like water desalination, renewable energy, and industrial zones to create jobs and improve living conditions.
    • Ease restrictions on Gaza’s borders to enable trade and foster economic growth. Support IMEC, the India-Middle East Corridor! as a mechanism for achieving peace.
  2. Strengthening Israel’s Security Diplomatically:
    • Work with regional partners to dismantle terrorist networks in Gaza without displacing civilians.
    • Renew efforts for a two-state solution that ensures both Israeli security and Palestinian self-determination.
  3. Providing Immediate Humanitarian Aid:
    • Increase funding to UNRWA to address the dire humanitarian needs in Gaza.
    • Establish international oversight mechanisms to ensure aid reaches civilians without empowering Hamas.

Conclusion: A Call for Justice and Pragmatism

Trump’s Gaza plan is a reckless proposal that ignores the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It threatens to destabilize the region, violate international law, and deepen the suffering of millions. For Israel, the plan offers no true security, only the illusion of a solution that would backfire in the long term.

The path to peace is neither quick nor easy. It requires a commitment to justice, respect for human rights, and a recognition of the deep historical ties that bind Palestinians and Israelis to this land. By rejecting Trump’s plan and pursuing a more pragmatic and humane approach, Israel and its allies can work toward a future where security and dignity are not mutually exclusive but mutually reinforcing.
