Ukraine Strikes Again: Underwater Blast Damages Bridge in Covert SBU Operation

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has carried out a dramatic new strike on the Crimean Bridge — this time from beneath the water — in what officials describe as a complex and high-stakes operation targeting the symbol of Russia’s occupation of Crimea.

At 4:44 a.m. local time, SBU operatives detonated 1,100 kilograms of explosives (TNT equivalent) beneath one of the bridge’s main support pillars, causing serious structural damage to its underwater foundation.

This marks the third successful Ukrainian operation against the bridge — but the first known instance involving underwater sabotage, demonstrating Kyiv’s growing capabilities in asymmetric warfare.

“This was not just a physical blow — it was a psychological strike against the occupiers,” said SBU chief Vasyl Maliuk, who personally oversaw the mission.

According to Ukrainian sources, the operation was prepared over several months with strict secrecy and precision. Officials note that the timing of the explosion — 4:44 a.m. — was deliberately chosen for symbolic impact.

A Symbol Under Fire

The 19-kilometer Crimean Bridge, which connects Russia to the illegally annexed peninsula, has long been touted by the Kremlin as a triumph of engineering and territorial conquest. Its destruction, even partial, carries significant strategic and symbolic weight.

Previous strikes have damaged the bridge’s road and rail traffic capacity. Monday’s underwater blast may further compromise its long-term stability — and deal yet another blow to Russia’s logistics in the southern theater of the war.

Strategic Messaging

Ukraine’s latest attack reflects an evolving strategy: combining technical innovation with symbolic targeting. By striking the Crimean Bridge — again and in increasingly sophisticated ways — Kyiv seeks to demonstrate both resolve and reach.

It also sends a message to domestic and international audiences: Russia’s grip on occupied territories is neither absolute nor unshakable.
