Unconditional Support:The True Meaning of Advocacy

The global landscape of Israel advocacy has shifted in a troubling direction. Increasingly, we witness a phenomenon where support from abroad comes with a terms-and-conditions agreement. Far too many Zionists and advocates outside of Israel have begun making their dedication to the Jewish state conditional upon which political party holds power in Jerusalem. This approach is not only a misunderstanding of what it means to stand with Israel, but it is also actively detrimental to the country’s survival.

When you look up the fundamental definition of advocating for a country, the core principles are clear. It means promoting, defending, and advancing that country’s interests, values, reputation, or policies on the international stage. It is about protecting national security, improving international reputation, attracting alliances, and defending the nation against criticism and misinformation. Nowhere in the definition of advocacy does it say, “Support the country only when its democratic choices align with your personal worldview.”

Advocacy vs. Domination

There is a profound difference between constructive engagement and political overreach. How can anyone claim to be a champion for Israel while simultaneously demanding that its democratically elected government resign? That is not support; that is an attempt at domination. It is an exercise in hubris for those living comfortably abroad to dictate terms to the citizens of a nation who are the ones actually putting their lives on the line to defend it.

Israel is a robust, vibrant, and fiercely competitive democracy. The citizens of Israel go to the ballot box, debate passionately, and choose their leadership. In a true democracy, that choice deserves absolute respect from the outside world—especially from those who claim to love the country. When advocates abroad seek to deepen internal political divisions by weaponizing their support, they cease to be defenders and instead become contributors to the noise that undermines Israel’s stability.

The Duty of the Diaspora Advocate

A dedicated supporter of Israel should focus energy where it is needed most: building Israel’s goodwill and protecting its image in the court of public opinion. The role of the diaspora advocate is to point to the positive sides of this incredible nation and to relentlessly debunk the lies and false narratives that flood modern media.

Israel is a very special, tiny country operating under immense global pressure. It faces a unique, almost impossible obligation to be better, to be stronger, and to win every single conflict. This is not because of a desire for fairness or praise; it is because Israel’s sheer existence depends on it. In a neighborhood where weakness invites aggression, Israel cannot afford to falter.

Strength Through Unity

Israelis are famous for their endless discussions and fierce internal debates. It is a natural part of the culture. Yet, history has shown that when it counts the most, the country sticks together. The ultimate goal for the global pro-Israel community must be to mirror and restore this unity, especially to the outside world.

A Crucial Rule of Geopolitics: Never show an enemy your weakness. When adversaries perceive division and fracture within the pro-Israel community, they grow bolder. Internal bickering from abroad only feeds the narratives of those who wish to see the state fail.

Those who advocate for Israel from abroad must remember a vital truth: support Israel not by deepening internal divisions, but by standing beside her strength. Honor her beauty, champion her innovations, and recognize the profound resilience that has carried her through every storm. True advocacy is unconditional. It stands firm through every election cycle, honoring the will of the Israeli people and defending the nation simply because it has a right to exist and thrive.

About the Author
CEO of Time to Stand Up for Israel, a nonprofit organization with a powerful mission: to support Israel and amplify its voice around the world. With over 200,000 followers across various social media platforms, our community is united by a shared love for Israel and a deep commitment to her future. My journey as an advocate for Israel began early. When I was 11 years old, my father was deployed to the Middle East through his work with UNTSO. I had the unique experience of living in both Syria and Israel, and from a young age, I witnessed firsthand the contrast in cultures and realities. That experience shaped me profoundly. Returning to the Netherlands, I quickly became aware of the growing wave of anti-Israel sentiment — and I knew I had to speak out. Ever since, I’ve been a fierce and unapologetic supporter of Israel. I’m not religious, but my belief is clear and unwavering: Israel has the right to exist, and Israel has the duty to defend herself. My passion is rooted in truth, love, and justice. I’m a true Zionist at heart. From my first breath to my last, I will stand up for Israel.
