What the world needs. . .
Now.
More than ever.
A little glimmer of hope.
Hearts and flowers, glitter and maybe a little glitz.
And even cupid at work, a little romance in the air, or at least on the silver screen.
Valentine’s Day.
And thoughts turn to sending frilly cards and notes to friends and family. To let them know that we are thinking of them, sending love in an envelope with a heart shaped stamp.
Or little gifts to make them smile, a pair of fuzzy slippers to warm the toes, a soft throw to curl up with a book, a great read, or a few of their favorite nibbles.
In the days before, scouring the web, or braving the mall, in search of that little something, then heading to the post office or UPS to assure it arrives before the big day, waiting patiently on lines that wind out the door, for those sending gifts or greetings afar.
Closer to the holiday, the groceries are bustling, shoppers scooping up bouquets of gorgeous red roses, boxes of delectable chocolates, baskets of fresh berries and cream, and ingredients for a romantic home cooked dinner for two, or more.
The vibe is pure happiness, the crowds smiling at the little ones wriggling in the shopping carts, the moms cajoling them with a sweet or two, the elder folks chatting up the fellow shoppers, often allowing a hurried one to slip in front of them in the check out line.
It buoyed my spirit, cheered as much by the patience and generosity, the human connection, the kindness.
And I realized, as February 14 arrives, shopping done, Valentines in the mail, that that is just what I need now.
What we all need now.
Valentine’s Day.
Love, sweet love.
