When Bar-Ilan University is on the Move, Israel Moves Forward

The trauma of war has reshaped every aspect of Israeli life. Economic, cultural, and psychological recovery are a collective effort as Israel begins to reimagine its future. In this moment, resilience is not merely a value. It is a necessity for survival and progress.
In the face of such profound challenges, Israel’s universities stand as critical engines of reconstruction and hope. Academia has always played a central role in shaping the country’s identity and future, but today that mission takes on renewed urgency. Through research that drives innovation, programs that train the next generation of civic and scientific leaders, and outreach that strengthens the social fabric, academic institutions are both helping Israel heal from within and positioning the nation for a resurgence on the global stage.
One institution in particular has become a symbol of this transformational journey: Bar-Ilan University. Recently, Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics confirmed that Bar-Ilan has become the nation’s second-largest research university. For those of us who have witnessed Bar-Ilan’s transformation over the past decade, this milestone is both historic and deeply gratifying. It tells a story of renewal, vision, and purpose—one that could only have been written by an institution uniquely grounded in both tradition and innovation. Only a community grounded in strength could thrive in the face of the adversity of the past two years.
Bar-Ilan is on the move. Over the past eight years, the university’s enrollment has increased by 30 percent—the highest growth rate among Israel’s major research universities, and an advancement from fifth to second place nationwide. Nearly half of that growth has come from graduate and doctoral students, underscoring Bar-Ilan’s expanding role as a powerhouse of advanced research and innovation.
What we saw was an institute transformed. Across disciplines—engineering, medicine, cybersecurity, AI, the exact sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities—students are choosing Bar-Ilan not only for academic excellence, but because they see a university deeply committed to the success of their students and the advancement of Israel.
An Institution Transformed
Once viewed as more traditional and homogeneous, today’s Bar-Ilan reflects the full diversity of Israeli society. The university has intentionally broadened access—investing in modern facilities, inclusive policies, and a campus culture that values every student’s contribution to the shared story of Israel.
Bar-Ilan is not just adding new academic and research initiatives, it is building the ecosystems to sustain them. From engineering and medical programs to strengthened departments in law, psychology, and the exact sciences. Interdisciplinary collaboration now defines its academic identity—bridging technology, science, ethics, and public service.
The results are clear: public trust in Bar-Ilan is soaring. In Globes’ 2024 National Brand Index, Bar-Ilan ranked third among Israel’s most-recommended universities. In a national survey of prospective students, it ranked second in preference.
Where Values Meet Vision
Bar-Ilan’s rise is about more than numbers—it is about identity.
At a time when Israel, like much of the world, grapples with polarization and uncertainty, Bar-Ilan stands as a bridge. Rooted in Jewish values and moral responsibility, it fuses faith with intellectual openness, tradition with modernity, and community with innovation. This balance resonates deeply with our supporters. As I’ve seen in my work with American Friends of Bar‑Ilan University, donors are rallying around a mission that advances health, tech, and energy—fields where Bar‑Ilan’s strengths are distinctive—and does so explicitly in service of society.
The commitment extends to students whose lives have been upended by national service. Thousands of Bar‑Ilan students are balancing their studies with extended reserve duty; scholarship support has become both a lifeline and a statement of solidarity. When we invest in these students, we are investing in Israel’s future leaders—across labs, clinics, and classrooms.
A Future in Motion
Bar-Ilan is not standing still. It is redefining what it means to be a modern Israeli university: advancing cutting-edge research, strengthening national resilience, and shaping the next generation of ethical leaders. Particularly through its pioneering advances in AI and nanotechnology, Bar-Ilan is positioning Israel for the challenges of the 21st century.
Israel’s fastest-growing university is both proudly Israeli and globally engaged—a university in motion, with momentum that shows no sign of slowing. In the international arena, the future of scholarship and science should and will be fueled by academic institutions such as Bar-Ilan that build bridges, not boycotts.
Soon, the world will have the chance to experience this momentum firsthand. The Bar-Ilan University Global Gathering, taking place May 8-13, 2026, will celebrate the university’s 70th anniversary under the theme Progress, Pioneers and Purpose. The event will highlight the people, ideas, and discoveries driving Israel’s next generation of innovation.
At a time when Israel is simultaneously rebuilding and redefining its future, Bar-Ilan stands as a source of healing, resilience, and renewal—bridging science, spirit, and society to help the nation move forward.
I invite you to be part of this milestone celebration—to honor the 70 years that made Bar-Ilan’s achievements possible, and to look ahead to the next 70 years of impact. You can express your interest in the global gathering here.
Because when Bar-Ilan moves forward, Israel moves with it.
