When will we ever learn

When will we ever learn

(This is written as I watch the sorry spectacle of  liberal American Jews endorsing Obama’s pact with the Iranian devil, even as most of America stand strongly opposed to it)

Examining the behavior of Diaspora Jews both now and since at least the early 19th century — and I speak of all Jews from the extremely religious to the extremely assimilated — it suddenly dawns upon me that they share a fatal common denominator, an impulse if not a desire, to be destroyed.

Each in its own way creates both the temptation and, at times the excuse, to bring out the most heinous impulses of the host societies.  This is not a matter of blaming the victim; on the contrary. Rather it is that the victim is oblivious both the what it is that turns dormant Jew hatred into violent Jew hatred, and the victim simply refuses to undertake the available measures to protect, let alone rescue himself.

Two polar examples:

1.As the Holocaust loomed, ultra-Orthodox Jews were instructed by their rabbis NOT to go to Eretz Israel, or even to America.

2.Secular Jews created and bought into a slew of innovative leftist ideologies which advocated a universalism rather than a particularism, into which they hoped to subsume themselves. These proved suicidal.

Neither has learned anything since then. And the unlettered and ideologically/spiritually/intellectually neutral Jews in between have in the past, and will once again, suffer the consequences as well.

The manifestation of this today is the sickening sight of secular Jews in America dancing around the Golden Calf of Barack Obama, and turning rapidly and vehemently against Israel. Any normal and objective person would realize how counterintuitive this behavior is, and how it can only lead to horrifying consequences.

And, of course, the Orthodox Jews, even those who pay lip service to the idea of Israel, remain rooted in their Diaspora mentality, incapable of learning from history or reading the handwriting on the wall.

It is no different in the UK, where the Hasidim of Stamford Hill insist on being sitting ducks, while the lefties in the BBC and academia think they are making friends by stabbing Israel in the back.

I take solace in my absolute belief that Israel remains the eye in the global hurricane, both  because of its geographic location and because we have a critical mass here that is free of that quietly desperate Diaspora myopia. And while Israel will welcome diaspora refugees when the inevitable time comes, past experience shows that Jews wait until it’s to late to attempt their escape.
