Beats me, or doesn’t it?
Israel has the anti-democratic rule of a threshold for the Knesset of 4 (out of 120) seats. The pretext is that a situation with too many small parties is unworkable. It is not, of course. This quorum is imposed by the larger parties that want to gobble up the smaller ones.
The Netherlands has a threshold of one seat in the 150-seat House, and one in the 75-seat Senate! A party with now 1 seat in the House, last month got 17 seats in the Senate elections!
Why can’t they run together? They might even get more seats than 6 or 7 because now many refuse to cast a lost vote for a party that won’t make it.
I’m afraid that the answer is still sexism. Yes, both parties were the only ones headed by a woman, but that doesn’t mean they are sexism-free zones. Overblown male chauvinism and ego don’t die in a few years. Women rising to the top might have to put up similar battles as men in the other parties. When people act against their own best interest, it must be ego.
The only power of the oppressors is the leniency of the oppressed.
The greatest hope for the right now in Israel is disunity on the left.
In related news, the sworn enemies of Israel are now more hopeful than ever that they finally can send all Israeli Jews untimely to their last resting places ‘because of the split in Israeli society.’ However, they are just fooled and fooling themselves as follows.
1. They are fooled about the split. It only exists between the vast majority and the waning government. That always happens in a democracy before the left returns to power. They don’t know democracy, so they wrongly assume that massive protests mean the State is falling apart.
2. All die-hard Antisemites fool themselves until they expire that the world is close to seeing the end of the Jews. They never learn from all the other bigots who went to their graves with this false and unrealistic vision. Hitler, Arafat, Nasrallah, all blinded by hatred for all Jews.
