Why I Question Israel

“Destroy them.” “No ceasefire.” “globalize the intifada.” This is some of the outspoken radical sentiment that has pervaded every part of Jewish and Palestinian communities since the events of October 7th, 2023. Anger understandably continues to ravage both societies. Yet, the evident fury and bold rhetoric only maintain the violent status quo in the Holy Land. The leaders of Israel and Palestine exploit this horrific sentiment to preserve their influence and media attention. Ironically, even with the light shining bright on the Middle East, peace has not yet been achieved.  As a proud Jew dissenting from my community’s rather bold stances on Israel, which often entail blind devotion, I urge everyone to question the authorities in both nations and not fall into the trap of basic talking points.

Let me start by saying I love the vision Israel carries. The nation is the foundation of Judaism and provided a place of refuge for Jews who had been persecuted worldwide after World War II. Its founding ideals are a testament to Jewish perseverance and equality. Yet, despite viewing Israel with such love, my devotion to Israel is constantly doubted simply because I question and criticize how the nation has manifested itself. Loving something does not mean excusing its faults. If someone you love was committing wrongdoing wouldn’t you feel obligated to intervene? For this reason, when I observe the continuation of an aggressive military occupation in the West Bank and the horrific destruction of Gaza, I know I must speak out. When I do speak out, I am asked why I spend more time questioning Israel than a terrorist group like Hamas. The truth is, you can’t reason with a terrorist group, but you can reason with a nation that pushes a huge emphasis on democracy. Israel should be in a constant push toward self-preservation which means being in a consistent push toward peace. Unfortunately, under the current Israeli government, Netanyahu’s policies suggest his political survival takes precedence over genuine peace efforts. When was he last engaged in constructive dialogue with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas?

When I see the events unfold in the Middle East, I’m reluctant to rush to find basic talking points that have engulfed social media. Conflict in the Middle East is far more complicated than a simple quote or phrase. If it were really that simple, there would be peace all over.

A nation’s longevity depends on loyal opposition, which is why I speak out.  There is a desperate need for a path forward to peace for Israel and Palestine; however, that will only occur once there is a common understanding of one another. That means questioning the nations you love and advocating for their success.
