And why it must be left-leaning
So much nonsense is volunteered and repeated ad nauseam against rulings of our highest court. My aim is not to try to make everyone feel good. Rather, I’m here to inform and argue against popular and persistent misunderstandings.
Not Elected
No, the High Court is not elected by the People. So what? Our President, the head of the Bank of Israel, civil servants in general, the chief rabbis, or even our PM are also not elected. But they are obligated to formulate their own positions and can differ with everyone else and especially a Knesset majority. And, conversely, elected MKs are not above the law or general ethics by virtue of them being elected or having a majority.
Not Codified
The High Court sometimes rules without a clear basis in the Israeli books. So what? There is unwritten, intuitive, and international law. Not everything we codified. Exactly for that too we have a higher court, to intervene when common sense or humane morality are grossly violated.
Left-wing
The High Court is too left-wing. I bet you it is! One of its main functions is to protect powerless individuals against the powers that be, like immoral majorities. A majority cannot pass a law that takes from a minority (or individuals) some or all human or democratic rights for no good enough reason. One branch of government can’t undermine another independent one. That surely irks the comfortable and the powerful, but that irritation is a sign the High Court does its work!
However, to my taste, the Court is much too cautious before it interferes. I would never have agreed to Ben-Gvir standing in elections given what the journalists of Uvda found on him. Same regarding anti-Zionists in the Knesset. If you speak out against any Jewish State, you should enjoy no rights from our democracy.
Stop
Stop degrading or frustrating the High Court. Tomorrow, you might need its protection!

Like most of his readers, he believes in being friendly, respectful, and loyal. However, if you think those are his absolute top priorities, you might end up disappointed. His first loyalty is to the truth. He agrees that in a post-truth world, that's irrelevant, but then this is for the record. He will try to stay within the limits of democratic and Jewish law, but he won't lie to support opinions or people when don't deserve that. (Yet, we all make honest mistakes, which is just fine and does not justify losing support.) He admits that he sometimes exaggerates to make a point, which could have him come across as nasty, while in actuality, he's quite a lovely person to interact with. He holds - how Dutch - that a strong opinion doesn't imply intolerance of other views. *
Sometimes he's misunderstood because his wide and diverse field of vision seldomly fits any specialist's box. But that's exactly what some love about him. Chronologically, his most influential teachers are his parents, Nico (natan) van Zuiden and Betty (beisye) Nieweg, Wim Kan, Mozart, Harvey Jackins, Marshal Rosenberg, Reb Shlomo Carlebach, and, lehavdil bein chayim lechayim, Rabbi Dr. Natan Lopes Cardozo, Rav Zev Leff, and Rav Meir Lubin. This short list doesn't mean to disrespect others who taught him a lot or a little. One of his rabbis calls him Mr. Innovation [Ish haChidushim]. Yet, his originalities seem to root deeply in traditional Judaism, though they may grow in unexpected directions. In fact, he claims he's modernizing nothing. Rather, mainly basing himself on the basic Hebrew Torah text, he tries to rediscover classical Jewish thought almost lost in thousands of years of stifling Gentile domination and Jewish assimilation. (He pleads for a close reading of the Torah instead of going by rough assumptions of what it would probably mean and before fleeing to Commentaries.) This, in all aspects of life, but prominently in the areas of Free Will, Activism, Homosexuality for men, and Redemption. *
