Zelensky – the Bar Kokhba of the Ukrainian people

The Bar Kokhba Revolt was a rebellion by the Jews in Judea against the Roman Empire. Fought circa 132-136 CE, it was the last of the two major Jewish-Roman wars. It followed the failed revolt of the Jews against the Romans in 66-73 CE. The first revolt in 66-73 CE ended with the destruction of Jerusalem. According to Roman Historians, during the Bar Kokhba revolt around 580,000 Jews perished and 985 villages were destroyed.

The Bar Kokhba revolt greatly influenced and changed the course of Jewish history: It decimated the Jewish people and put an end to the Jewish numeric and cultural hegemony in the Land of Israel. Israel became a desolated distant province for successive imperial powers of the region for almost 2,000 years, until the renewal of the Jewish live at the end of the 19th century.

During his time, Bar Kokhba was greatly admired by the Jews, who joined his army in masses to fight the Roman oppressor and invader. With the passage of time, this admiration subsided and was replaced by a critical retrospective: For many Jews, “Bar Kokhba” became instead “Ben Kusiba”, a derogatory term meaning “Son of Deception”, to emphasize that he was a false Messiah, bringing destruction to the Jewish people.

Volodymyr Zelensky – Ukraine’s president – is still at his best in the role of one of Shakespeare’s tragic figures, a role that he mastered during his previous stint as an actor.

So far, more than 4,000,000 civilians have left the country and it is estimated that another 6,000,000 Ukrainians have become internally displaced. Many of the cities are in ruins. There is no end in sight for this war, that could last weeks if not months or years.

Europe and the US are happy to let Ukraine fight Russia till the last of the Ukrainian soldier. And the images of war are a magnet and gift for an explosive social media, news channels and “righteous” people everywhere in need to express and channel their indignation for the poor state of affairs of this planet. Like the chorus in an ancient Greek tragedy.

Never mind that this planet needs the cooperation of everyone to preserve it, especially the Chinese, the Russians and the Americans. Socialists, communists, liberals, conservatives, leftists and rightists. None of them is going to disappear soon: we have to learn to live and tolerate each other, listen to their points of view and try to accommodate their basic needs, for the common good of all.

My only hope left is that this local war will not spill into neighboring countries and degenerate into World War III.
