A Major Snow Storm For Jerusalem Arrives

A significant snowstorm will arrive tomorrow afternoon in the Jerusalem area.

Rain is expected to transition to snow in the late afternoon or early evening hours.  Between 10 and 20 centimeters of snow is expected overnight, depending on elevation. Areas with higher elevations outside the city (as in Gush Etzion) should see 20 to 30 centimeters. Snowfall will accumulate at 2 to 3 centimeters per hour  (about 1 inch an hour where snow accumulates most intensely).

Temperatures are expected to be near or below zero in the Jerusalem area. Winds will be quite strong, so blizzard conditions may occur at times.

Elsewhere, extremely heavy rain should fall in the morning hours in the cities of Zichron Yaakov and Haifa, leading to severe flooding. Close to 100 mm of rain is expected in these cities. Thunderstorms as well as thunder-snows are likely.

The cold weather will continue throughout the day, with periods of snow or snow and rain throughout the day. Due to heating of the sun, any snow during daytime hours will probably whiten the sky, but not add to our accumulation.

Stay safe. This is a major winter storm. Cold, snow, winds, and even floods can create life threatening conditions.

Another storm may threaten at the end of the first week of February.
