A More Complete Day
I wrote previously that happiness flows from completeness. Succos lets us experience completeness physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. We build and eat in the Sukkah, recognize that our walls do not keep us safe, feel embraced by G-d, and wave the four species in service.
When all four dimensions move in the same direction, we experience the happiness of Succos. Just as the mitzvos of Succos let us experience completeness, the simple mitzvos of daily life let us experience it every day.
Physically, we can take pleasure in eating well, choosing tuna and a salad instead of noodles and cheese. We feel more alert all afternoon.
Last night I noticed that the people, shuls, and shopping make my neighborhood such a wonderful place to live. I pass these things every day but rarely stop to appreciate them. Mentally, we can pause to notice the good, thank G-d, and see how cared for we are.
Emotionally, we can choose enthusiasm rather than waiting for the mood. I look forward to my 7 minutes of morning stretches and feel satisfied when I finish.
Spiritually, we can turn an ordinary act into service by writing an email with the person receiving it in mind, thinking about what they need and making sure it helps them. Today, I reread one before sending it.
On days I focus on these acts, more of my life moves in the same direction. I feel more complete, and noticeably happier. Try it.
