Dear Congress

As many of you are aware, there will be an election later this year and all 432 House of Representatives seats are up for re-election. Why am I writing you now when the election is so many months away? Because it seems that many, if not most of you, are not aware that your behavior in this current Congressional year has not been a particularly admirable one. Your lone signed bill is almost as unpopular as the bill you tried repeatedly to kill — namely, the Affordable Health Care Act. The logic behind killing a bill that helps millions of hard-working Americans is lost on us. Giving wealthy persons and corporations tax benefits in the billions is a job killer for the majority of middle and lower income people struggling to stay afloat in this economy. The fact that you think it will simply come out of “entitlement” programs that help millions more retired or sick Americans shows you are not the best stewards of our economy.

We now have the spectacle of Congressional hearings whose sole purpose appears to be covering up the misdeeds of the current President and his family. Months ago, we were assured that you would get to the bottom of the several questions raised before four separate investigatory committees. Now, many of those committee members have joined the Trump camp in denigrating and attempting to neuter both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and her parent agency, the Department of Justice. What makes this so offensive is that some members of Congress engaged in this activity are former prosecutors who know the law and really should know better.

This might be a good time to tell you that once you have ruined the reputations of both Federal agencies and their thousands of dedicated employees, there will be no effective rule of law to prevent them from next coming after YOU on trumped-up charges. Similarly, there will be no offices staffed with U.S. Attorneys to protect you from the wrath of some miffed-off Congressional staffer who does not care for the way you part your hair and decides to indict you for something that you did not do because he can once he sees the checks and balances of our government system can be manipulated to benefit a few individuals and their agendas.

Finally, I would respectfully ask you to consider who is paying your salary? Here’s a hint: it is NOT your corporate Fortune 500 masters, it is us citizens. When we pay our taxes, those funds are pooled and allocated towards keeping the government running smoothly. When you diddle around with the tax tables giving the wealthy money they don’t need, you are basically cutting off your nose to spite your face. Our only solace is knowing that we can soon vote you out of office and repair the damage you have wrought. We can also re-write laws to make in difficult, if not downright impossible, for those with a hidden agenda to ever wreck havoc on our system of government and the rule of law ever again.
