We have a marvelous president. Especially his stand against racism was already known before he took up Israel’s highest but largely ceremonial office. One of his prime tasks is promoting unity. So it’s understandable that at the commemoration of one of the worst infightings in Jewish and Zionist history, he warned against expressions of self-hatred.
Let’s not forget why there is Jewish self-hatred. It stems from being surrounded by enemies. It’s a (failing and malicious) attempt to deal with the tension coming from being surrounded by an enormous number of people who want us all dead. Let’s not point fingers at the victim.
While Jewish Law is tough on traitors that endanger everyone and on even any Jew speaking badly about a fellow Jew, we must not lose sight of where it all comes from.
So, I respectfully dispute President Rivlin’ assertion that our “greatest threat lies within us.” Also the PM barked up this wrong tree.
We don’t find that an enormous amount of Dutch people hate the Dutch and slanders them to the non-Dutch, distancing themselves from those Dutch who are not OK and even plead for sanctions and worse against the Netherlands.
Once the whole world rallies around the Jews to protect and celebrate us, we will have no infighting either, no Jews who don’t want to be Jewish.
So, instead of calling upon Jews to stop fighting each other, let’s call upon the Gentiles to stop persecuting us. There are enough decent people around to stop all Jew-hatred. Only, they are largely passive.
That is what our president should address primarily IMHO.
